De Hembrug is a former military base that produced artillery weapons since 1895. In 2012 the site started offering work spaces for creative and innovative entrepreneurs who set shop in its empty warehouses. Earlier this year, a call for proposals was issued for the development of the site. With its 43ha, Hembrug is the site of the largest development project of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. Stakes are high for this unique site which is expected to host a mixed use development and to contribute to the economic growth of the region. Since 2014, the site is open for visitors who can visit designers’ studios and showrooms, an artillery museum, attend food festivals, open air movie screenings and much more. During the weekend, I often like to just take a stroll in its deserted alleys, between the old warehouses and end my visit at the Yada Yada Market where you can grab a coffee or have dinner while enjoying some live music. 📸: @sarahessbai. #wayfindingguidezaandam

In the Dutch golden age, Zaandam was a large milling center. Its famous windmills are visited by thousands of tourists every year. However, many of the tourists visiting the iconic mills of Zaanse Schans overlook this solitary corn mill across the Zaan River. De Bleeke Dood, literally the pale death, was built in 1655 and is the oldest wooden mill with a gallery in the Netherlands. The mill fell slowly in decline in the second half of the nineteenth century until it was renovated in 1954, and again in 2001 by the Zaan Mills Association (Vereniging De Zaansche Molen). Today the Bleeke Dood is functional again and back to grinding grains for the neighborhood bakers. 📸: @sarahessbai. #wayfindingguidezaandam

Welcome to the third and final day of @sarahessbai's IG takeover! As I took a different route walking towards the city center, I stumbled upon this lovely house by pure chance. I was quite surprised as I started reading the plate hanging by the home's door. This is the same house painted by Monet in his “la maison bleue” (the blue house) painting! Claude Monet found refuge in Zaandam in 1871 when he fled the war in France. He made 25 paintings on canvas and nine sketches during his stay depicting the city’s architecture and surrounding landscape. The MonetAtelier, located in another building painted by Monet in the city center, houses an exhibition of the 25 paintings (reproductions) and organizes walking tours to the different locations pictured in these paintings.

The Dam square, not to be confused with the Dam Square in Amsterdam, is where one would end a shopping trip through the Gedempte Gracht. Lined with restaurants and bars, frequented mainly by locals, you are sure to get an authentic Zaandam dining experience here. The statue in the center of the square is of Czar Peter I of Russia who resided in Zaandam in 1697 to learn more about the shipbuilding craft. The house where he stayed is on the list of national monuments and is located just across the Dam in the Russian neighborhood. 📸: @sarahessbai. #wayfindingguidezaandam

This is the main shopping street of Zaandam. Here, you can find a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and the joyful ambiance which make it a destination not only for Zaandammers, but also for the residents of the surrounding cities and villages. This pedestrian street is part of the city center redevelopment project, Inverdan, started in 2003, which aims to redefine the identity of the city, while diversifying and strengthening its economic position in the region. The canal (gracht), running in the middle of the street and crossed by multiple small pedestrian bridges, used to be buried under a cement slab to accommodate traffic, until it was uncovered as part of the Inverdan project. 📸: @sarahessbai. #wayfindingguidezaandam
