…my friend Ollie looking out at ground zero, mid-aughts… …back then my Dad was the Executive Chef of The Beverly Hilton so I would always hit him up for rooms when I travelled. I had no idea where the Millennium Hilton was, turns out it was right next to ground zero. Then we got a room on a super high floor on that side of the building — this was after the clean up so you were just looking down on a giant hole — so surreal, it was hard to understand how to feel… …I shot this on a plastic Polaroid Land camera I had picked before working on “In Her Shoes”. It was the first big show I’d ever worked and it was brutal — I was a must hire so the hazing from the camera department was gnarly and we worked scheduled 14 hr. days, which in camera meant 16 hr. days, 6 days a week.😳🤯 …I started shooting with the camera when we got to Florida. It had 3 different sized tree symbols to represent focusing distance, that’s it. The more depressed I got during the shoot, the better I got at focus. I then gave most of the Polaroids away, putting my name and number on the back hoping it would lead to the next gig — it didn’t. …on this trip Shaz was taking me around NYC to all her spots (she lived near 7th & B in the 90s) and Ollie just happened to be in town. We ended up at a bar with a pool table and played a couple games — I’ve known Ollie since high school when he made a fake ID that said he was 18 so he could drive down to LA and compete in pool tournaments, which he would often win — he was a retired pool shark — Naturally he won the game we were playing and a woman had laid quarters on the table to play the next game… …Ollie introduced himself and since he won the last game it was his break. He then proceeded to run the table like he was on autopilot — focused, calculating, fast. After the 8 ball dropped he walked over to me and said, very quietly, “I love it when I do that”, and then turned to the woman and said “I’m so sorry!” She replied, “If I’m paying for the game I at least want to take a shot!”🤣🤣🤣 Ollie paid for the next round and let her break. It was incredible to see that side of him, even just for one game. . @stahliver #NYC #tbt
