My mom would rent out a whole pizza restaurant for my birthday parties growing up. A single waitress with three kids, I still don’t know how she pulled it off. All my classmates were there, and their parents. The pizza was flying. While adults chatted over slices and wine, the kids watched the magician shape balloons until we got bored of that and chased Ryan Tate around the video games, because he was the dreamiest 3rd grader. There’s photos of a tiny me standing among piles of unopened Hello Kitty gifts, the whole neighborhood there, having cake and kicking back.
I learned to make it as big as you want it to be for your birthday. I got older and traded pizza parlors for panoramic views, Hello Kitty gifts for real hellos and hugs, balloons for boulders and kept the neighborhood. Celebrating a birthday hike with friends each year reminds me what a gift life is, even if it’s wrapped up tight sometimes. It reminds me that we don’t walk alone. That good things are worth the effort. That nature is the cake and the icing, too. Thank you SoCal RE hikers and thank you Natural Experience hikers and friends for making it as big as I wanted it to be. #happybdaytome #gooutside #sherecovers #soberaf #shakeyspizza #socalhiking #birthdayparties #80skid #soberaf #airliftsareawesome

The appetizer we are loving right now: Gluten-free shrimp toast with remoulade and watermelon radish. Crispy, fresh, and flavorful.
