Jay Ferguson's 3rd studio album - Real Life Ain't This Way!!
Original 1979 copy

Spirit Series (22/24)

Jay Ferguson was spared 1-hit wonder status with 1 more Top 40 single, the terrific "Shakedown Cruise".

It's a slick, professionally performed album. The high level of craftsmanship is due to the personnel involved. The executive producer is Bill Szymczyk & the musicians include ex-Jo Jo Gunne & future Boston drummer Curly Smith & latter-day James Gang guitarist Bob Webb. Also lending a hand are Joe Walsh & Walsh's longtime drummer, Joe Vitale. The sleek interplay between Webb & additional guitarist Tony Battaglia provides integral support for Ferguson, particularly on "Shakedown Cruise." The spry piano chords and bright-yet-crunchy guitars fit nicely with the vocal melody.

A bouncy, Billy Joel-esque feel permeates "No Secrets." The jazzy saxophone solo by Col Clesser adds a bit of spice to the otherwise laid-back "Real Life Ain't That Way." The lyrics of "Davey" are slight, thus, it would have been better off as an instrumental to showcase the musicians' skills. There's a bit of sparkle to "Paying Time," which includes Walsh on lead guitar. The pleasant ballad "Too Late to Save Your Heart" is punctuated by Mark Colby's saxophone work.

A straightforward cover medley of the Rolling Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together" & "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" is indicative of both a shortage of original songs & a desire to just have a fun studio jam.

Jay Ferguson's 2nd studio album - Thunder Island!!
Original 1977 Canadian copy

Spirit Series (21/24)

Recorded in Miami with Joe Walsh guesting on many tracks, he hit a home run with the title track mega-hit. A sun-drenched summer anthem, it would be the biggest song of Ferguson's career and later turn up on '70s compilations. The rest of the album was similar in mood and feel: largely up-tempo late-'70s rock/pop.

Most tracks are graced with Walsh's guitar, which keep the songs from falling too largely on the pop side of things. Though not a perfect album, it was less uneven than most of Ferguson's other solo efforts, though it definitely sounds a product of its time. Which can be good or bad, depending on your taste in music.

"Thunder Island" peaked at No. 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 1, 1978. The recording features Joe Walsh on guitar. In Canada, it reached No. 8.

As "Thunder Island" was Ferguson's highest-ranking song on the charts, he is sometimes tagged a 1-hit wonder. However, he achieved an additional hit with the song "Shakedown Cruise" which reached No. 31 on the Hot 100 the week of Jun. 23, '79.
