Chasing runners @thespeedproject Part III 🔑 Death Valley unlocked
21
i was not able to run The Speed Project for the last two years due to health issues and ED recovery. when my @onedayleft.tsp homies invited me back for an even gnarlier adventure, i was apprehensive and unsure, but ultimately decided to say fuck it, and trust my body, my recovery, and my progress.

i won big with that bet.

LA —> LV through Death Valley and some incredibly desolate California desert. we ran 440 miles in 54 hours and 44 minutes; essentially straight through two nights and then some. we came in fourth place after going neck and neck with another strong team at the end, pushing our legs to run fast af miles when we’d already put 45-50 miles on them.

there were lows. my stomach was not having it due some nutrition combos early on. i chugged Imodium and kept going. we ran five hours battling another team in a headwind that was the definition of soul crushing. my electrolytes got imbalanced and that is not a fun ride. during the second night @cplezia could barely keep his eyes open, would then jump out and run, get back in and nod off. i hallucinated a police vehicle that i swore was stopped in front of me while i driving the jeep up some hill in the middle of nowhere. the last morning we ran hill repeats into the wind that made me so nauseous i puked on the side of the road so i could rally.

the lows are nothing, though, when compared to the highs: sunrise over Panamint valley; flying into badwater basin at dusk; feeling so utterly free at 3 am running by moonlight surrounded by mountains that i cried bc that is what it truly means to feel alive; being part of a team whose members are just as hot, dirty, and tired as you are, and battling their own inner voices, but never give up; rediscovering what your body is capable of (sometimes every few hours).

the constant rediscovering of yourself and what you have inside of you alongside friends is what makes these ultras so special, especially after not being able to run them for years. i also find it fitting that i only just now learned where our team name comes from:

“there is only one day left, always starting over: it is given to us at dawn and taken away from us at dusk.” —Jean-Paul Sartre.
