New to playing around with resin and want a few tips? Or just a nosey Nelly who likes to know random things? This post is for you! Hereā€™s a few things I wish I knew starting outšŸ„° ā€¢ Not all resin is the same. Itā€™s very much you get what you pay for! I recommend a small bottle of the cheap stuff to get started - youā€™re going to probably waste a lot while learning. I use the cheap stuff when Iā€™m trying something new that I know will take a bit to perfect. I try to be as zero waste as possible so my personal pets always get the cheap trial and error tags lol. Get a nice brand that is rated for UV sun exposure (helps prolong yellowing in the sun!) ā€¢ Latex is your best friend when you donā€™t want resin on something! I use latex to cover the back of my tags when Iā€™m doming the front. Itā€™s inevitable that resin will drip, latex allows you to peel off those drips and protect the resin thatā€™s already there. ā€¢ Resin is MESSY. Silicone matts can be expensive when starting out to cover your workspace. I cut open trash bags and tape them to my desk. It doesnā€™t look the best but itā€™s incredibly cheap and easy. I change it out every couple of months. Use gloves when youā€™re working! I have scars under my fingernails where resin got there and dried / cracked when my nails grew šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« ā€¢ Donā€™t get frustrated. I know, I know. Thatā€™s so much easier said than done but I almost threw in the towel SEVERAL times before I ever opened this shop. It took close to a year for me to make a tag that was decent enough to send out for testing. Every failure is a step closer to your goal! ā€¢ Iā€™d personally skip on UV cure resin. The quality isnā€™t there in my opinion and it tends to crack, peel and yellow a lot faster. I completely understand itā€™s useful for some crafting like jewelry making etc but dogs are rough and I donā€™t think itā€™s worth investing money into when the results arenā€™t promising. 2 part resin is intimidating but youā€™ll get the hang of it! Iā€™m 6 years into resin and still make mistakes all the time. For the most part every mistake is fixable! (Unless you donā€™t mix your resin good enough. That shit is a mess. Put your back into it and mix THAT SHIT)
