ANNETTE 4 MJ 4 EVA. ❤️

Annette Geneva is in love, and she wants everybody to know about it.

This month’s Written In Reverb finds her falling spectacularly hard for MJ Lenderman’s Manning Fireworks, a record of gloriously flawed characters, crooked humour, beautiful guitars and unexpected tenderness. And then there’s ‘Wristwatch’. Good luck getting her started on that one.

Part album appreciation, part full-blown love letter, Annette’s latest is funny, fiercely personal and beautifully observed. Another reminder of why we love her writing so much.

Sunday arvo reading from @annettegeneva.jpeg ! ☀️ She gets stuck into the new self-titled album from DMA’S, a record that finds the band coming full circle, embracing their rough edges and rediscovering the magic that made us fall for them in the first place.

Eleven songs, plenty of heart and a reminder that sometimes the best way forward is to remember where you started.

Beauty, violence and really bloody good songs. 🖤

@annettegeneva.jpeg gets inside @blondshell’s Violins, a record about friendship, bodies, spirituality, grief, healing and figuring yourself out without pretending it ties everything up neatly.

Sharper, stranger and more vulnerable, it might just be Blondshell’s best yet.

Annette Geneva’s evocative writing has struck again, and this time she might just have outdone herself.

This month’s Written In Reverb steps into Phoebe Bridgers’ Stranger in the Alps and the messy emotional weather around it: Ryan Adams, “Motion Sickness”, complicated fandom, power, sex, grief, memory, and the songs that keep receipts long after the people attached to them have changed.

It’s not just a piece about an album. It’s about the strange little ghosts we leave inside records, and the records that keep following us home.

@annettegeneva.jpeg spent Thursday night sitting cross-legged on the floor of @suffragetterecords, under a tiny galaxy of stars, listening to @phoebebridgers *Lost Weekend* before the rest of the world got to hear it.

What followed was 52 minutes of memory, grief, love, disorientation, huge production and devastatingly intimate songwriting.

“The album is huge in its construction but intimate in its delivery.”

From *The Governor’s Waltz* breaking her completely, to *Bobby* recalling the emotional release of *I Know the End*, Annette takes us inside both the record and the wonderfully strange experience of hearing it for the first time in a room full of equally transfixed people.

Her review of Phoebe Bridgers’ *Lost Weekend* is live now at the Waxx Lyrical media centre. 🌌

🎬 NEW REVIEW: *Mile End Kicks*

Chandler Levack’s *Mile End Kicks* takes a sharp, funny look at music obsession, youthful entitlement, bad decisions and that dangerous age where your taste can feel suspiciously close to an entire personality.

@annettegeneva.jpeg finds plenty to love here, especially in the film’s refusal to romanticise the scene too heavily. It’s awkward, self-important, exciting, humiliating and occasionally brilliant. Which, frankly, sounds about right.

Also: there’s a cool AF playlist at the end of the review featuring Alanis Morissette, The Strokes, Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Broken Social Scene, The Libertines, Rilo Kiley and LCD Soundsystem. 🔥🎧

Thirty years down the wrong road, Modest Mouse keep moving through the maze.

*An Eraser and a Maze* is messy, haunted, funny and stubbornly alive. It doesn’t chase the past, tidy up the weirdness or offer easy answers. It gives landmarks.

@annettegeneva.jpeg reviews the band’s first album in five years, their first independent release in nearly three decades, and a record shaped by loss, legacy and Isaac Brock’s refusal to stop wandering.

Old harmonies, new weather.

Snocaps’ self-titled debut could have arrived buried under indie supergroup lore: Katie and Allison Crutchfield reunited, MJ Lenderman in the room, Brad Cook behind the desk.

Instead, it feels far more human than that. Ragged, warm, lived-in and full of songs that don’t kick the door down. They simply stay.

The evocative writing of @annettegeneva.jpeg has struck again.

This month’s Written In Reverb finds her slipping back inside Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, a record of loneliness, longing, cigarettes, self-reliance, sad-eyed devotion and songs that somehow grow older with you.

Twenty years on, this one still feels like opening an old notebook and finding a younger version of yourself waiting inside.
