These mammal bodies are strange, beautiful, and wonderful.

They are also just our temporary home.

When I remember that, I want to embrace life.

Say yes to life.

All of it.

We talk a lot here about putting down our phones and going outside into nature.

But maybe nature isn’t only outside.

Nature outside.
Nature inside.
No different.

Sometimes a nature break is watching the sunrise.

Sometimes it’s sitting beneath a tree.

And sometimes it’s finding your friend Megan and dancing your ass off.

So today’s invitation is a little different:

Find someone to dance with.

Even if just for 30 seconds.

And feel what it’s like to be alive.

What are you holding onto that you need to let go of?

I spent so many years holding tightly to the things I loved, hoping they would never go away.

And pushing just as hard against the things I hated, desperately wanting them to disappear.

Holding on.

Pushing away.

All the while, life was going by.

Things began to change when I started learning to let go.

And letting go hurt.

I let go of a 20-year marriage and a 24-year relationship.

I let go of a business.

Friends.

Money.

One of the most precious beings in my life—my Bernese Mountain Dog.

I let go of Maine, the Pine Tree State, a place I loved deeply.

I let go of my friend Dr. Jay Fugarazzo, who helped me find my way back after a devastating hip surgery, and a family who had taken me in as one of their own.

I let it all go.

And I went on the road.

There is a lot more to that story.

But I’ll leave it here for now.

Because letting go didn’t mean that those people, places, relationships, or experiences stopped mattering.

It meant learning that I could love something deeply without demanding that it stay.

That I could experience pain without making an enemy of it.

That I could stop spending my life pushing and pulling against a world that was always going to change.

Maybe that’s one of the ways we stop wasting our suffering.

We let it teach us.

We let it change us.

And when the time comes—

we let it go.

We let it be.

So I’ll ask you again:

Wednesday, the 19th of August, 2026.

I learned of dear Ollie’s passing on Monday from my dear friend Jim Ready, who sent me a beautiful picture of a sunset and let me know, “Hey, so sorry to hear about Ollie.”

I’ve been in Bali the last two months on a bit of a self-retreat, surf trip. Just healing and getting ready for the third quarter of my life.

I like to think of life in four quarters, like a football game. Age 0 to 25, quarter one. 26 to 50, quarter two. Then we get a bit of a halftime break to kind of look over our life and see where we’re at. And then, third quarter, which I’m in right now, 51 to 75. Then fourth quarter, 76 to 100. Anything after that’s overtime. You know, sudden death.

My grandmother lived to 96. My other grandmother, 94. So we have longevity in this family. So I like to think beyond the average American life expectancy.

Nonetheless, I let Jim know, “Thanks for letting me know. This is the first I’m hearing about it.”

And he was sorry about it.

But I wasn’t sorry.

In the belief system that I’ve been practicing in, he’s in heaven now, with his brothers and with all of my ancestors, somewhere over the Rainbow Bridge.

And this beautiful Rainbow Bridge poem, author unknown, has helped me get through the passing of Bear, my first Bernese Mountain Dog, which was absolutely devastating and heartbreaking. Probably some of the most traumatic heartbreak I’ve had in my life.

Four years ago today, I underwent a surgery that changed my life—femoral acetabular impingement repair. The road to that moment was anything but straightforward. For two years, I lived with the pain of a misdiagnosed hamstring tear. A year after that, it was misdiagnosed again—this time as a psoas strain. Insurance repeatedly denied me the necessary MRIs, leaving me stuck in a cycle of uncertainty and discomfort. Finally, my good friend Matt Millman helped me access imaging that revealed the truth—my left hip was destroyed.

From that moment, everything shifted. I entered pre-rehab with Leslie Fleming, who prepared me for the road ahead with unwavering support and strength-building techniques. Thanks to the incredible care and precision of Dr. Jay Fugarazzo at Access Sports and Dr. Davis, the former assistant doctor of the Boston Celtics, my recovery surpassed all expectations. What was meant to take a year, took only six months—I was back in the water, surfing stronger than ever.

We trained with intensity and purpose—blood flow restriction therapy, cold immersion, and surf-specific recovery protocols—transforming what felt like the darkest chapter of my life into fertile ground for growth. As Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us, “No mud, no lotus.”

What once seemed like disaster became a gift. Dr. Jay—now a brother for life—encouraged me to explore new horizons, leading me to the mindfulness-based stress reduction program at UMass, then to George Mumford’s Mindful Athlete program, and eventually to Jack Kornfield’s teacher training and Inward bound Teacher Training . This experience not only strengthened my body but reshaped my entire life, pointing me back to a path of service and mindfulness.

Today, I celebrate not just the journey of healing, but the incredible people who walked it with me. Leslie, Kathy, Jay, Matt, and all my friends and family—thank you. I’ll be forever grateful for your support and belief in me.

Life will always surprise us. What feels like an ending might just be the beginning of something beautiful. #believe #grateful #faith #mindful
