This project has been 15 years in the making. Bought out of an airplane hanger in Perris California for $100. This car has moved with me twice in California and then to Texas. Client projects, a growing business, and everything else prevented me from getting the time to work on it. But finally after a year at Apex Auto Works the paint, body, and wiring have all been wrapped up. It is now at Starr Studios getting a custom livery that I have not seen yet.

The car’s custom livery will be unveiled at @wheelswatcheswhiskey and Sean will be live painting the final touches at the event

I can’t wait to finally drive this car!

Some details deserve to be done the old-fashioned way.

For our 1960s Bulova Racing Van project, we worked with artist and traditional sign painter Sean Starr to create hand-painted details that feel right at home on a vintage race transporter.

Long before vinyl wraps and digital printers, race teams, dealerships, and businesses relied on sign painters to put their names on everything from shop windows to transporters. That history was important to this project, so we wanted the lettering and graphics to carry the same human touch they would have had in the 1960s.

Brush, paint, a steady hand, and years of experience. No shortcuts.

It is a small part of the overall restoration, but one that helps bring the entire story together and gives the Bulova Racing Van the character of something that could have rolled into the paddock sixty years ago.

This Meyers Manxter 2+2 was built to go much farther than the local cars and coffee.

Inspired by Bruce Meyers’ legendary Baja-conquering dune buggies, the Manxter combines the unmistakable shape of the original Meyers Manx with a longer, full-length Volkswagen chassis and room for four. Our build started with a 1970 VW pan and quickly became a ground-up project involving new floors, chassis repairs, a roll cage, side-impact protection, off-road suspension, Toyo tires, auxiliary lighting, expedition equipment, and more than a few late nights before its debut at the SEMA Show.

The goal was to drive the Manxter from Texas to Nicaragua as part of a Flag Expedition for The Explorers Club. Political unrest and regional security concerns changed those plans, and the expedition moved forward without the car. We still traveled into Nicaragua to map, photograph, and document ancient petroglyphs hidden along rivers, in caves, and deep in the jungle.

The mission continued. The Manxter simply had to stay behind.

We have not given up on taking it south. We hope to bring the car to Central America in the near future and continue the journey it was built to make. Until then, you can see the Expedition Manxter in person at this year’s Wheels | Watches | Whiskey at The Stella Hotel and Lake Walk in Bryan, Texas.

It may be clean when it arrives. We make no promises about how long it will stay that way.
