The next stop was The Tote for three exceptionally eclectic and diverse artists who came together to bring a delectable sonic banquet.

First up was @chrissmithmusique who crafts magnificently expansive soundscapes which are highly emotional and captivating. There's a brilliant intensity to Chris' music, to the degree you almost forget to breathe, but then something shifts, and you start again. It's not often you can hear a pin drop in The Tote, so this is an experience I'll remember for some time.

Next was the chaotic fun of Star/Time (@startime.sonics ), the latest creative vehicle of the brilliant Paul Kidney. Star/Time brought the funk, the groove, the exploding saxophone and guitar, and delicious sonic effects. We all loved it!

Finally, it was the brilliant Fancy Weapon whose debut album we were there to celebrate. And what an epic album it is. Luckily, we were treated to an equally epic show that demonstrated the supreme skills of all involved. Joel Silbersher, Claire Birchall, Mick Turner and Guy Maddison are all at the top of their collective games and we are the beneficiaries of that. As well as ripping through a huge chunk of their self-titled debut, we were treated to some new songs too. Clearly, there's a strong creative vision within this band and they're moving boldly with it. Absolutely fantastic stuff ❤️

SATURDAY: FANCY WEAPON - Album Launch

An unlikely band name and a most unlikely band. Fancy Weapon melds a cross-generational bunch of Melbourne music perennials and a recent transplant to form a brooding, ragged palette of art-rock:

Mick Turner (Dirty Three, Mess Esque, Venom P Stinger, Bleak Squad)
Joel Silbersher (GOD, Hoss, Tendrils)
Claire Birchall (Smoked Salmon, Paper Planes) -
Guy Maddison (Mudhoney, Lubricated Goat, Bloodloss)

In a city of blessed with legendary life-long musicians, the Fancy Weapon folks have all remained deeply immersed. Although they aren’t kids, each member still plays in multiple bands; touring, recording - indeed Guy, having recently returned home to Aus after decades in Seattle, remains Mudhoney's bass player - and continuing to forge paths of high creativity while adding to their varied catalogs.

The songs for Fancy Weapon’s debut album were recorded in a single session at Finn Keane’s Head Gap Studios in Preston in late 2024, before the band had even played in public and a week before the studio tragically burned to the ground (after a neighbouring business was criminally torched). Fortunately, the sessions were saved, and Finn & the band were able to continue mixing and finishing the record at an alternative studio. If the combination of Fancy Weapon’s vast experience isn’t intriguing enough, the instant chemistry heard across this album should delight any and all fans of Australian underground rock. The shared lead and backing vocals from Claire and Joel are affecting while the interplay of Mick’s iconic guitar stabbing and weaving through Joel’s powerful and layered playing works to brilliant effect. Rhythmically Guy (bass) and Claire (drums) provide a pulsing backbone, sounding as if they’ve been playing together for years.

Best wishes to everybody for 2026! I'm very excited about what new musical adventures this year will bring.

I'm stoked to be starting my music year with the psychedelic free jazz rock group Star/time @startime.sonics as we take over the Thornbury Bowls Club @thornburybowls on Sat 10 Jan 2026. We're extremely privileged to have I Hold the Lion's Paw @iht_lionspaw join us on the line-up. What an honour!

If you haven't heard of them already, here's the group's bio -

'Jon Hassell meets Ornette Coleman, meets Sun Ra. I Hold the Lion’s Paw sounds familiar and, at the same time, like nothing else you’ve ever heard.

The brainchild of ARIA nominated trumpeter-composer-electronic artist Reuben Lewis, Lion’s Paw will guide you into an immersive world of electro-acoustic ambience, grungy afro-beat grooves and psychedelic free jazz. This is music as assemblage, using the stage as a laboratory whilst practicing post-production sorcery in realtime!

“a beguiling stew of afro-beat, jazz-rock-inflected postbop, and electro-acoustic noise.”

— The Wire

“More likely was the feeling of having stumbled into someone else’s LSD trip”

— Sydney Morning Herald'

Philip Brophy and Dave Brown will kick off the night.

Yep. You don't want to miss out on this gig. See you next Saturday!
