Mark 8:27-38 ✨ The disciples are beginning to see how Jesus fulfills the prophecy of the Messiah, but they don’t fully understand. They are struggling to embrace a Messiah who doesn’t fit into their expectations.

We expect things too, like peace and prosperity, and we feel like we shouldn’t have to go through trials and hardships. We’re shocked when we do.

Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Messiah they have been waiting for. Jesus commands them not to tell anyone, controlling the timeline of His ministry and death. Learning Christ’s purpose and mission and what it means to follow Him was a process for the disciples.

They thought He shouldn’t have to suffer or die. Peter rebukes Jesus for saying He would, and then Jesus rebukes him, saying “Get behind me Satan”.

I had never had someone explain this before, but my husband explained it so well! We often wonder why Jesus has such a strong response to Peter’s rebuke, it seems harsh. But Peter is suggesting that Jesus can be the Messiah without having to die. He doesn’t realize that he is aligning with Satan. Satan had tried to tempt Jesus by saying He didn’t need to die on the cross. Jesus knows what He is doing. He knows the purpose of His mission, and He knows that the cross is necessary.

If we desire to be His disciples, we must deny ourselves. Following Jesus means re-evaluating what it means to follow Him once we know the true purpose and mission of the Messiah. The disciples thought Jesus shouldn’t have to suffer or die, but Jesus teaches them that following Him will cost something.

The ransom of our life is costly and it’s one that only Jesus can pay. We must embrace Jesus as our one true hope for this life and the next, even when it is hard and we don’t always understand what He is doing.

One day Jesus will return, and we will be free from sin and death forever. Stay with Him. Don’t leave. Keep persevering. He will see you through 🙌🏻
