Zero intention of going to college. And then one email changed the whole trajectory. 👀⚽

Sean was a decent student. Never a great one. Four years of ROTC. Everyone assumed he was going into the military. His family was quietly looking at community college options. The Naval Academy like his sister? Not a chance.

His senior year his travel team played a seven-aside winter tournament in Lynchburg. No college plans. No recruitment conversations. Just soccer.

About a week later an email landed from Brennan Hand — SVU's assistant coach at the time — saying: we were at that tournament. We saw you play. Have you thought about college? Have you thought about college soccer?

His answer? No. He hadn't thought about it at all.

One tournament nobody was treating as a recruiting event. One email from a coach who happened to be watching. One conversation that turned into a college career and friendships that have lasted over a decade.

Sometimes the path finds you. And it finds you in the most unexpected places. 🙏

This is the most practical and beautiful reframe of the Sabbath and youth sports I've ever heard. 🙏⚽

Cort and his wife Autum wrestled with the same question every LDS family in athletics eventually faces — what do we do when the tournament is on Sunday?

And what she found in her research stopped me cold:

The Sabbath is a day of rest from our normal day to day life. Not a ban on everything. A rest from the ordinary.

And going to watch your kids play sports isn't ordinary. You don't get to do that every day. That's special. That's a gift. So they made a decision — treat it that way. Go to church before or after if possible. Talk in the car on the way there. And after the game instead of just packing up and leaving ask your kids: what did you love about today?

Turn the drive, the sideline, the whole experience into something intentional and connected. Different from the rest of the week. Because that's what the Sabbath is supposed to feel like.

That reframe changed how I think about this completely. 🙏

Pochettino's impact on US Soccer goes way deeper than just the first team. And that's the conversation nobody is having. 👀⚽

Yes — he played Pulisic because when Christian is healthy the talent argument is hard to ignore. That logic makes sense and it's fair.

But what Pochettino has actually been building since he arrived is something this program has desperately needed for years:

A culture.

Not just a system. Not just a formation. An actual culture within the first team where entitlement doesn't automatically earn you a spot. And the improvement from previous squads — where that entitlement was quietly running the locker room — has been visible to anyone paying attention.

Because here's what drives me crazy. The Christian Pulisics, the Tim Weyahs — they feel entitled. Entitled to their position. Entitled to the world of US Soccer revolving around them.

Weston and Tyler handle it better. But Christian just expects it. And that attitude at the highest level of international football is a problem no amount of talent covers forever.

Pochettino is the first coach in a long time who genuinely doesn't care about any of that. And that is exactly what this program has been missing. 🙏⚽
