A rather lovely example of our choir’s history, kindly shared with us by @thevoicesquad, who are currently performing @theatreroyalbse

As you can see, @burybachchoir (formerly known as St Edmundsbury Bach Choir) gave a concert called ‘SING NOEL’ at The Theatre Royal on 21st December 1965; ‘the first production with professional staff at the theatre.’

We’ve already started our own research but perhaps you could help?

⭐️ Did you sing or perform in this concert?
⭐️ Were you there or maybe you know someone who was?
⭐️ Perhaps you were a @stedscath chorister at the time?
⭐️ Or maybe you were one of the professional staff?
⭐️ Do you remember Harper’s of Abbeygate Street?

It’s a fascinating slice of our choir’s long history in the town and we’d love to know more!

If you have any memories of this or access to any relevant information, we would love to hear from you. 🙏🏻 Either drop a comment below or contact us via DM.

The origins of this site began with the martyrdom of King Edmund of East Anglia in AD869. He was made a saint after being shot down by arrows by leaders of the Viking Great Army. His body was taken here in Beodricsworth, and a monastic community formed looking after his shrine.

Guthrum, Viking leader of the Great Summer Army was defeated by King Alfred the Great at Edington in AD878 (nine years after Edmund's death) and East Anglia became Christian ruled again. Guthrum surrendered and was converted into a Christian, given East Anglia to rule, and adopted his role well. He minted St Edmund memorial pennies, showing the impact of Edmund's death on mid-late ninth century AD England.

By AD1020, a Benedictine Abbey had been founded by King Cnut the Great and grew to become one of the largest and most important in England.
Abbot Baldwin (a Frenchman under Edward the Confessor's increasingly Norman like rule) was appointed and began construction in AD1065 on a new abbey church. The Cathedral at this point was St Denis Church and now being replaced with a new church of St James. It would become the cathedral in the 20th century, long after the great abbey was dissolved by king Henry VIII 😭

So many nice words about the Amen, so here’s what comes before it. A simple melody with a few less innocent chords underneath. 😇

Another extract from Saviour, breathe an evening blessing, premiered at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. With thanks to Claudia Grinell, Richard Cook and the choir.

‘Square Peg, Round Hole’ exhibition at St Edmundsbury Cathedral ⚫️⚪️

Gina Long’s artwork was showcased this week through an expansive exhibition at the Cathedral. I took photography students to photograph the set up, and they captured amazing imagery during the events too.

A brief showcase of Gina’s work here, it’s hard to do it justice on a screen - the benefit of seeing the work up close is the texture and scale, drawing you in to Gina’s personal commentary.

Thanks Gina & team for having us and congratulations on an excellent showcase 👏🏻

I’m very happy to share that I have changed job role to be Course Director of Photography at WSC 📷

This first week has been very busy but brilliant! Both year 1 & 2 photography have supported @ginageelong ‘s @squarepegroundholeart exhibition at @stedscath - we took a trip down to photograph the installation and a selection of the students did an amazing job photographing at the evening events too 👏🏻
