Grief is fascinating. Since Poppa Manning’s passing in 2016, Father’s Day would knock me on my ass every year. This year it was not the case. I certainly thought about my dad, but didn’t make the time or space to really meditate on him or the loss of him in my life. Whether out of self-protection, convenience, or something else altogether, it’s okay. As my dad would often like to say: “It is what it is.” This is him and his best friend, Richard @steeloii, at one of the many little parties he enjoyed throwing when he lived in the railroad apartment at 836 Milwaukee. Happy belated Father’s Day, Poppa Manning, wherever you are. #PoppaManning #Richard #Chicago #Illinois

I spent the last of my dad’s death day with Richard @steeloii, his closest friend and brother-from-another-mother. We talked about the day Richard found him and what happened; how my dad still offers sage advice in his mind; walked together by dad’s high school and to his building that I hadn’t seen since I was emptying out his apartment; and shared a late night diner meal - one of my dad’s, and my, favorite events. Despite my best efforts, I am forgetting him. It is unavoidable. As hard as it was to be in Chicago on the nineteenth for the first time since he died, I am feeling incredibly grateful to be home and surrounded by people that support and care about me. It made the day suck significantly less.

“Dust devil swept you away.
My recollections are
All that's left of you.
Swirl and sway without me.
Dust devil swept you away.
Whirling playful dancing about you.
What's left of you is
Ash and urn and this silent horizon.”

This is me and Richard, @steeloii: my dad’s Ulysses, his best-friend-brother-from-another-mother-person. Therefore, he’s my Uncle Richard, even if he’s only a few years older than me. We’ve been through a lot of shit together; he’s always strong, always cool and collected, reminding me to stay the same way. I love this guy a lot.

While I was running around Cook County, trying to see Mom as much as possible between tightly scheduled visits, she remarked, “You have so many friends to visit out here...” implying a bit of a “How?” She’s absolutely correct, and I definitely wasn’t able to see as many as I had hoped to connect with. The truth is, I don’t know how or why I’ve been so fortunate to meet and learn from and love and be loved by the people I can call friends, but I am infinitely grateful for every one. I am blessed. #Richard #UncleDick #friends #family #hashtagblessed #soloved #lovemylife #Chicago #Illinois
