When I told friends that I’d decided to work on a documentary that charted the last year the director would spend with his ailing mum, most gave me a look that one might give a friend who’s confessed they’re getting back with an abusive ex. I’d tell them that the director and I are so different. Our experience of grief is so different. He’s sensitive and earnest and I’m, of course, clenched, and so it wouldn’t be like reliving my mum’s illness. And I was right. Somewhat. We are so different. Our experience of grief is so different. And yet, in the footage I did recognise aspects of what we went through, my mum, my sister & I.

I recognised how corticosteroids cause skin to retain fluid so that atop an emaciated body, a greying face starts to swell into the shape of a well-fed hamster. How, when there isn’t long left, time can seem to take on a physical dimension, possess a weight and a thickness. How strength in the face of death and loss is theatre we choose to play a part in, for ourselves as much as for each other, until someone forgets their line and the act briefly drops, reminding us, once again, that we are all just tender bodies together in a room - be yours human or hamster.

(Spiel contd in comments coz ig has a miserly character limit and I can’t stfu)
