Lately, the Lord has been teaching me about vulnerability. If you know anything about me, you probably know that I'm not one to be open about what's going on in my life.

Over spring break, I got the opportunity to go and serve at Palabra de Vida in the Dominican Republic. One thing I learned while in the DR is that God can teach you a lesson through anything. The first thing we got to do was help clean up the beach that the property is on. While walking around looking for trash, I noticed a small bottle cap in the sand. When I went to go pick it up, it was heavier than I expected. The only thing that I could see was the bottle cap, but what I couldn't see was that there was a whole bottle buried underneath the sand. Once I got the bottle and put it in the trash bag, I noticed something. The waves were slowly taking the sand back into the ocean to reveal more and more trash that had been buried for who knows how long.

When I try to bury things to avoid people noticing, God begins to move the waves. When what seems to be just a bottle cap of a struggle that is showing, I try to keep the rest hidden out of fear that someone will find the rest of the bottle. What I've always struggled with was allowing God to move those waves. I would always get frustrated when something would come up that someone noticed because I wanted my life to look like I had everything together. God put us on that beach to clean it up, and God puts a community in your life to help clean you up. When you allow that bottle cap to show, your community can come alongside you and help you clean up the rest of the bottle. In order for that problem or that struggle to be taken care of, vulnerability has to take place.

I learned how to take the first steps of being vulnerable through the friends that the Lord has placed in my life over these past few months. These friends helped me share my newfound testimony in the DR and have helped me begin to break down the walls that have been built up for a while now. I'm learning how to be vulnerable starting with my closest friends, and I'm learning that being vulnerable starts with asking the Lord to start moving the waves.
