#jujitsu nothing cooler then white belt, anytime I sucked it was ok because you could fall back on I’m a white belt. I tell my white belt friend take photo. This is one of my favorites. Training a year and two and people are always like what Belt to you, you love it so much and you have to say I’m a White Belt. By the way, wipeouts are legit, killers. You can have a White Belt collegiate Wrestler, White belt judo Black Belt, or a guy who is a 20 Year St thug. I was probably just a spaz for sure. Me and @alekskocev were White belt’s together and I still consider him my classmate, he took some time off but he’s legit Blue Belt monster. I hope he gets his Purple Belt soon cause he’s just a nightmare. Nicknamed him the abominable snowman or snowman for short.

Getting injured sucks.

Especially when training is such a big part of your life. Your first instinct is usually to rush back, but sometimes being forced to stop is exactly what you need.

The rest. The recovery. The time to reflect. The chance to study your game instead of constantly doing it.

Step away from the pressure to constantly train and improve. 🧠😌

Give your body the recovery it’s been asking for 🔋💆🏻‍♂️

Watch matches, analyze, find weaknesses 🫡

Time away makes you appreciate the mats again. 🔥📈

Progress doesn’t always mean training 🧘

Your career is measured in years, not weeks 🎯

I’m learning that taking time off isn’t falling behind.
Sometimes, it’s part of moving forward 🥋🥇

Stefan Kocev is a photographer, surfer and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt who grew up between Venice and New York. His work developed around the surf, skateboarding and martial arts communities he was part of, eventually becoming particularly associated with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

During the 2000s and early 2010s, Kocev photographed Rickson and Kron Gracie, documenting their training, personal lives and the environments around them. He later spent time with the Gracie family in Rio de Janeiro for a VICE photo essay on Rickson, and his photography became closely connected to the Jiu-Jitsu community in California.

His work also extended to Metamoris, where he documented athletes and training alongside the events themselves. Rather than limiting his coverage to competition, he photographed the academies, people and everyday environments surrounding the sport.

His experience as a surfer influenced the way he approached these subjects. Landscapes, portraits, travel and informal moments became part of his photography alongside the action, giving his portfolio a broader range than conventional sports coverage.

There’s a distinct visual language to Stefan Kocev’s work, the kind of photography you can recognize without needing a name or signature attached to it. His use of light, composition and environment remains consistent across the different subjects he photographs.

Kocev also played an important role in shaping the cultural identity surrounding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as we know it today. Through years of documenting athletes, academies, landscapes and communities, his photography helped establish a visual record of the sport beyond competition and contributed to the cultural image that Jiu-Jitsu carries today.
