Stein Metzger was a fixture near the top of the Hermosa Beach Open throughout the 2000s, reaching the final four five times and the podium four times. His Hermosa résumé included runner-up finishes in 2002 and 2006, along with third-place finishes in 2001 and 2005.

That consistency was part of a decorated professional career that produced 18 tournament victories worldwide. Metzger won two international titles, earned a silver medal at the 2003 Beach Volleyball World Championships and represented the United States at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, finishing fifth. He was inducted into the CBVA Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2023.

Metzger has since built an equally impressive coaching resume. He helped lead UCLA to NCAA Championships in 2018 and 2019 before taking over at Texas, where he has guided the program to its first conference championships and first NCAA Final Four appearance.

From competing on the Hermosa podium to building championship programs from the sideline, Metzger’s impact on beach volleyball has extended across generations.
