The Iris Nebula

Does anyone else see a keyhole in the cosmos?

This is the Iris Nebula, a brilliant blue reflection nebula surrounded by enormous clouds of interstellar dust, about 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus.

The blue glow comes from starlight scattering off tiny dust grains. But the dark clouds surrounding it may be even more fascinating. They contain complex organic molecules, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and fullerenes — carbon molecules that include the remarkable 60-atom spherical structures known as buckyballs. These are some of the building blocks of cosmic chemistry, though their presence doesn’t imply life.

And just how far away is this cosmic keyhole?

In my Cosmic Inch universe, where the solar system is reduced to roughly an inch across, this extraordinary cloud of dust and complex organic molecules is just 22 miles away. A short drive in our miniature universe — yet its light has taken 1,300 years to reach us.

I captured this image over three exceptionally clear October nights in Virginia. Using a Stellarvue SVX 140t telescope and Zwo 2600mm astrophotography camera. Nearly everything you see beyond the blue center is incredibly faint dust, revealed through hours of accumulated starlight.

A keyhole into a universe that is both unimaginably vast and astonishingly intricate.

We shared views of the Sun and its sunspots at the Endowment for Regenerative Artists festival today. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to look through the telescope and spend a little time with us.

My latest Astrophotography goal is to get more significantly more detailed photos, so I keep pushing with bigger projects. I spent over 20 hours on the Pelican Nebula! I’ve included cropped-in views to show all the detail you wouldn’t get by just zooming in.

It’s the Great Orion Nebula! When your test stack is this gorgeous you have to share it. Also a testament to the amazing skies at @starfront_observatories .

This is one of a few nebulae that are so bright that you can see it with the naked eye, even from a city! If you have a smart telescope and have pictures of Orion, I’d love to see them! Didn’t expect this much from short exposures.

I stacked a few different exposures lengths today for the final HDR image, just making sure the exposures I picked would work well.

This first and last image is just 150 x 30s images, for just 75 minutes of integration time. The second image is only 5 minutes, made up of many 5s exposures to capture the detail in the bright core. Excited to see how the final image turns out!

I found this data on an old drive. It came from my previous rig, and I never had a chance to process it!

This was shot on a mono camera, which records only brightness and no color, so I captured each gas separately through its own filter. I then assigned each one a color: sulfur (SII) to red, hydrogen (Ha) to green, and oxygen (OIII) to blue, a mapping called the SHO palette. The gold areas are rich in both hydrogen and sulfur, and the blue is where oxygen is strongest.

IC 405, the Flaming Star Nebula, about 1,500 light-years away in Auriga.

Data:
Ha: 25 x 10 minutes
OIII: 12 x 5 minutes
SII: 20 x 10 minutes
Total Integration – 8.5 Hours

Captured on a @stellarvue_telescopes SV080ST with a @zwoasi ASI6200MM Pro and Astrodon 5nm Ha, OIII, and SII filters. Tracked on a Losmandy G11. Processed with PixInsight and @photoshop
