"What A Time"

In the 1920s and beyond, rent parties and house gatherings were more than nightlife—they were survival, joy, and community. They were how neighbors lifted one another, how culture thrived, and how the essence of “the village” stayed alive.

In his newest body of work, What A Time, Essex-born painter Assandre Jean-Baptiste (b. 1994), also known as Huey Dynamite, reimagines this tradition through vivid acrylics that celebrate the rhythm of Black life. His expressive subjects, saturated in color and character, honor the heritage of African American community while offering a lens into identity, creativity, and self-exploration.
