Radiance takes many forms. In 2026, we honor Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon, whose work with Stemettes creates spaces where young women and non-binary people can discover STEAM as something lived, felt, and beautifully within reach – finding a place where they truly belong. This is the Power of Radiance in action.

The ‘Power of Radiance Awards’ is our long-term commitment to supporting education, employment and empowerment programs for girls across the world.

Let's Talk...

Sadé, our editor-in-chief, is a proud member of the Stemettes
community. She caught up with
Dr Anne-Marie discussing the inspiration about Stemettes and the importance of Black women within technology.

Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE is a prodigy in every sense of the word. Aged 11, she was the youngest girl ever to pass A-level Computing, and was just 20 years old when she received her Master’s Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Oxford. Since then, she has forged an enviable CV, including positions at blue-chip companies.

It’s brilliant to see my lovely, super-achiever friend Anne-Marie Imafidon (@notyouraverageami) taking a break from her regular goal-smashing schedule to help out the Countdown team with maths presenting duties while Rachel Riley is on maternity leave.

And a big F**K YOU to the pathetic, inadequate trolls who only ever view black excellence and success through their deplorable racist blinkers.

@theafricacentre Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon is the new and first ever black co-host of popular British TV show Countdown.

She temporarily replaces Rachel Riley on the @channel4 show while the TV presenter takes maternity leave. Dr. Imafidon quickly became the target of racist trolls on social media who claimed she was selected by Channel 4 because of her skin colour rather than her credentials. Nonetheless, she’s already proven to be a refreshing addition to the programme, and is winning viewers with her quick solutions to intriguing number and word puzzles.

She told @thevoicenewspaper: “Countdown is an institution and I love maths. As ground-breaking as it seems in 2021 to be a Black woman doing arithmetic every weekday on daytime TV, I’m hoping this means it won’t be going forward.

“Here’s to all the new arithmeticians, mathematicians, and people who are inspired by seeing me grapple with 75 times tables, obscure English words and the most serious trainer game on TV.”

Born and raised in East London to Nigerian parents, Dr. Imafidon, 31, has an impressive resume and an extensive background in Mathematics and Computing. She passed 2 GCSEs while still at primary school and, aged 11, became the youngest girl to pass A-level computing. At 20, she gained a master’s degree in mathematics and computer science from Oxford University. In 2013 she founded STEMettes, a social enterprise that works to inspire girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths, and was awarded an MBE in 2017 for her work.

Congratulations Dr. Imafidon!

We had a great time learning about the amazing work our MCs Of The Months are doing. It was great to learn how all these organisations and individuals (such as Stemettes, The Student Room Group, Elizabeth Wathuti, and more) are providing support for young people and highlighting the need for change on numerous issues. We can't wait to see what you all do!

Did you know we owe the material that is used to make bulletproof vests to a woman? How about elasticity – ever considered a woman contributed to this theory?

We caught up with Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, CEO of @stemettes and a part of the @aboutus2022 project, who served up some straight facts about International Day of Women and Girls in Science, as well as a mini Herstory lesson 👩‍🔬
