PERMISSION TO CREATE | AMHF’s Inaugural Creative Collaborative

Who gives us permission to create? And what happens when we stop waiting for it?

On 10.10.2026, AMHF brought together four incredible creative voices for Permission to Create, an intimate conversation exploring art, ambition, identity, and diaspora.

Hosted at Charles Moffett Gallery, surrounded by Melissa Joseph’s Casserole Culture exhibition, the discussion explored the personal journeys, cultural influences, and challenges of pursuing a creative life.

Our distinguished panelists:

@melissajoseph_art Visual artist exploring family memory, identity, and cultural heritage through unconventional materials.

@rajivmenon Founder of Rajiv Menon Contemporary, championing South Asian artists and greater representation in contemporary art.

@jeeenoooo Bharatanatyam artist and choreographer bridging cultural traditions with his artistic vision.

@anitakalathara Actress, writer, and filmmaker creating space for authentic South Asian storytelling.

Together, they explored what it means to challenge expectations, navigate representation, and build meaningful creative careers while embracing the complexities of cultural identity.

For AMHF, this inaugural Creative Collaborative marks the beginning of something meaningful: creating spaces for dialogue, artistic expression, and connections across our diaspora.

A heartfelt thank you to our Communications Director and moderator @anthony.ashwin for guiding such an engaging discussion, our wonderful panelists for sharing their journeys, Charles Moffett Gallery for hosting us, and everyone who joined us.

Because sometimes, the most important permission we receive is the permission we give ourselves.

If you love discovering South Asian artists and small businesses, we have a few people you should meet.

When we created A Seat at the Sadhya, our Onam experience at @monanewro, we wanted Malayali creatives shaping the details.

The people behind the music, art and design brought so much to the gathering, and we want you to know their work ✨

Behind the Table is our new series introducing the creatives and businesses who helped bring it all to life.

Follow 217 Collective to meet them, hear their stories and find a few new favorites along the way. 🤎

Okay, we know. It's been a minute.

But here's the thing about going quiet: usually it means we're heads-down on something we're not ready to show yet. And that's exactly where we've been.

If you've been part of a 217 room before, you know the good stuff is worth the wait. If you're new here, this is a good week to stick around.

Our moms knew it before we did. Real Kanjivaram silks are quite luxury in its original form. What if instead of rejecting the old ways, we carried them forward instead?

Save this post. Then call your mom or aunt to tell them what you learned today ✨
