All the flavors! All the colors! All the music! Happy Pub Day to @ayesha_rare for Mediterranean All the Way! If you know Ayesha, or have been to her restaurants, you know she’s not shy about flavor… or anything really. Nothing but love for the team that helped bring these images to life: @spencerwrichards @maeve_sheridan @caseyelsass. I can’t wait to see this in the wild! Thanks for having me at the table. ❤️💥

How did I miss the 4 year anniversary of this beauty coming into the world. To say this project for my friend @ericjoonho was super super special would be a major understatement. Eric, how has the time passed so quickly? 🥹 so many favorites here

When @maxiskitchen and I first talked about potentially illustrating for her cookbook last January, I did not play it cool at all and told her this would be my dream project. Fortunately that didn’t scare her away and together with @sanaelemoine and @stephaniehuntwork we translated Maxi’s recipes and kitchen strategies into illustrated guides. I’m thrilled to have played a role in her debut cookbook! It is available to preorder now and officially out March 3rd!!

Prop Styling.
A different form of hunting and gathering.

TURTLE ISLAND called for objects that evoked natural environments and native traditions, sharing Sean Sherman’s philosophy on food and life. I ventured North, South, East and West of the Mississippi. Scoured vintage + antique stores up North, discovered myself sifting through a pole barn outside of the city filled with rock and granite, shopped Native owned stores (SHOP LOCAL / SO many beautiful things.) and lots of marketplace pick-ups (parking lots, driveways and even some houses deep in the trees). Loved every minute of searching all the nooks and crannies for pieces that were not mass produced but made by hands. Objects with stories. Years of collecting as a prop stylist didn’t hurt either. The stash came in handy.

We borrowed personal pieces from Chef Sean’s kitchen, one-of-a-kind vessels from our food stylist Lara, Native artist designed blankets and ceramics from @eigthgenerations and sought out the work of native artists Chanelle Gallagher @waabigan_clay + @april.l.stone.

Grateful for all that was learned working on this book and everyone that I met along the way. Thank you to the @the_sioux_chef + the Minneapolis Crew! So much talent in one group. @k.a.nelson @kristincdonnelly thedavidalvarado @jaida.grey.eagle @lalunafood @meccabos Tess Bouska @SusanBarrientosfood

Thank you to @jaida.grey.eagle for sharing her indigenous cultural knowledge and the many introductions she gave me to native makers.

Thank you @waabigan_clay and @april.l.stone for sharing their personal work.

Thank you @eighthgeneration for sharing those exquisitely designed blankets.

Thank you to Owamni’s restaurant supplier Daly + DeRoma @dalyderoma graciously loaned us “whatever we needed”. (Which was a lot!). So many @steelite / ceramic plates, platters, silverware and glassware.

Thank you to cj_walter + @a_zharris for helping to load + unload the sea of bins and surfaces.

Thank you to Perry and @studio8900 Great space to shoot a cookbook.

Thank you to Local Shops: @birchbark_books @northland_visions #woodlandindiancrafts

Turtle Island is out!

“This book is an exploration of the delicious diversity of indigenous foods that have for millennia connected our environments, traditions history and cultures of the Native communities of the North American continent. With these recipes, I hope to influence how we look at the world through a non-colonial lens and hopefully will inspire a new generation of home and professional chefs to cook delicious, healthful culturally and regionally relevant meals. I also hope this will inspire readers for years to come to know more about the longstanding history of indigenous land we reside on, the beautiful diversity of peoples, culture and especially the massive opportunities for modern native cuisine”.

Sean Sherman is a 3 times James Beard Award-winning Oglala Lakota chef and a man with a mission. Chef, activist, entrepreneur, Sean gets people involved in that mission through his restaurant OWAMNI and non-profit NATIFS. Powering a movement of unity and shared energy that is providing work, supporting native suppliers and returning to a healthier way of eating. Get this book!

Truly grateful to be part of Turtle Island. Thank you Sean for your calm demeanor and infectious giggle. And to the Minneapolis + Mexico crew for sharing so much of their talent.

It’s pub day! I’m so honored to have been able to write this book with @downnorth_pizza and @coolhandmiz, tell their stories and share their recipes. We The Pizza is much more than a cookbook. It’s an impassioned plea for prison reform, a mission to better educate kids, and a love letter to Philadelphia. All the pizzas are named after songs by Philly musical artists! (Yes, there is a spotify playlist.) There’s even a pizza dedicated to the @philadelphiaeagles. If you haven’t had a @downnorth_pizza square pie yet, get some! So good. Plus all the pizzas, wings, fries and drinks can be made in a regular home oven. Grab a copy of this book. You won’t be disappointed. So many shoutouts... the photos by @artmurri pull you in immediately. The history lesson by @ajimaolaghere is inescapable. And the stories from Muhammad, Mike, Mar, Derrick, Myles, Perm and Miss Tremelle are pure soul - thank you for entrusting me with the sensitive moments of your lives. @raquelpelzel and @sallyekus had the vision, and so many others supported it, from @trejostacos to @marcvetri and @marcuscooks to @tonitiptonmartin. IG won’t even let me tag everyone i need to! Doing something important takes a lot of people. My heart is with you all. 🙏❤️💪🍕
