Sound Check vibes with @thegoodskywoman 🧡✨

It was truly such an honour to join @thegoddessseries_official for @musicdayincanada !

This evening of music was hosted by the one and only: @stephaniewestdal . She poured so much love, attention, and TOP TIER goddess energy into the evening. From the lineup, to the artisans, the evening showcased powerful female and female-identifying creatives on a national stage.

Huge shout out to Stephanie Westdal, The Goddess Series, and Music Day in Canada for creating an amazing evening. 🥰🎶

If you thought live drumming in studio recordings today was dead in pop music, think again. Check out Dua Lipa’s Break My Heart.
One of my favourite drummers, Chad Smith (Chilli Peppers) gives Dua Lipa the groove that only a live, gifted drummer like Chad can provide.

Check it out:

If I ever started teaching drums in the pop/rock genre, the first song I would play for my students would be this little-known Led Zeppelin song called Black Country Woman, from the Physical Graffiti album, featuring one of the most influential drummers in my world, John Henry Bonham.
It’s not Bonham’s flashy chops or drum solos I admire the most (I’m not a big fan of drum solos), it’s his tasteful playing, his musicality and his ability to give space to a song, like in Stairway to Heaven - every accent, every fill is so perfectly executed (like when he moves to the ride, omg).

In Black Country Woman, Bonham waits until halfway through the second verse before he starts drumming. Even then, he only begins with quarter notes on the kick drum and no crash cymbals.
In fact, there are only four crashes in the entire song! (check out the third one on the fourth beat, so perfectly placed).
More importantly, there are no drum fills in this song at all. It doesn’t need any and Bonham recognizes that.
Yes, there are classic Bonham variations of the beat (is there a better snare sound anywhere? Not just the drum itself and the tuning, but how Bonham plays it, lightly), there are no outright fills. Space, texture and tasteful drumming. That’s why he’s the best. Give it a listen.
