Dark Tea Captain’s Log 002. The making of Ballroom Dancer.

May 10th, 2026. If you’ve seen a Dark Tea music video or two, you know the drill with the references. Cassavetes this, Ashby that. Movies. “Have you seen ___?” My Gestalt psychotherapist gave me a hard time for asking that too often. So, how about another medium? Video games. The way of the future.

For the “Ballroom Dancer” video, the primary influence was the 2002 Gamecube remake of Resident Evil 1. The score, particularly the “Save Room” theme, was an influence on the song, so I figured this could also carry over to the visuals. Nick and I had just replayed it in March, and it holds up like gangbusters.

I forgot who said it but it’s true that 99% of the success of a film is casting, and my friend Stephanie Cappiello was the obvious and perfect choice for the strikingly beautiful ghost haunting the echoes of my mind in a Glendale mansion.

Cinematographer Logan Bik (whom I met playing poker), his pro team, and I got to work. We shot the entire thing in a chaotic 4 hour stretch. The ghost’s mystery is resolved when I discover a newspaper, which I aged by staining with actual dark tea, inside a glowing trunk. That’s actually an homage to Kiss Me Deadly. So much for the Gestalt breakthrough.
