In 2019, artist and researcher Asunción Molinos Gordo began In Transit (Botany of a Journey), a project that emerged from a serendipitous experience during a research trip to a waste management plant, on which her guide pointed out a phenomenon— tiny sprouts peeking out from the surface of the waste, signaling the early stages of germination. She reflects on her practice as deeply rooted in the study of common peasantry and explores themes of borders, globality, and interconnectivity.

Every year, American cemeteries absorb over 4 million gallons of embalming fluid, 1.6 million tons of concrete, 20 million feet of wood, and 64,500 tons of steel. Cremation, though more compact, burns natural gas in a blaze hot enough to release 550 pounds of carbon dioxide per body. With the pressures of climate change, there has been a push within the death industry to return to traditional burial methods and find a more sustainable path forward. As a part of our series on Metabolic Systems, Ludwig Hurtado reports from the frontlines of the green burial movement interviewing Michael Judd, the co-founder of
Morris Orchard Natural Burial Park, and Katrina Spade of Recompose, the world’s first human composting company.

In the first installment of our series Metabolic Systems, anthropologist and curator of the Ecological Design Collective Anand Pandian takes us on a discursive journey through various architectures of decay, investigating how designers and artists from the Venice Architecture Biennale to Accra’s innovative construction studios are navigating the relationship between rot and repair. In his piece, he asks what it might look like to design for decay.
