Seminar 7/12 - Advanced Research Methods with @matthew.d.kim. Such a busy week in Texas I forgot to post about class when I got home! Truth be told I’ve been busy writing the first chapter of my dissertation after getting the green light after presenting my prospectus. I’m researching the life of Jarena Lee through the lens of spiritual trauma. I’m excited about studying and getting to know the first female preacher in the AME. I also loved getting to meet the new first year students that will be joining us for class this year. It’s a great group and I love learning alongside and from these amazing scholars. We also got to overlap with the Follow the Call conference and hear from Nijay Gupta and Tara Beth Leach. I popped down to the conference as often as I could to visit some of the Seminary Sisters I’ve met online. It’s always great to visit with my Truett and Texas friends! Now back to writing ✍️😆

Grateful for the incredible ladies the Lord has placed in my life. Spending time with some of you yesterday reminded me of the blessings of friendship, grace, and love. He truly used you all to prepare me for ministry and life ahead.

Thank you for the encouragement yesterday! I love you!

Well, y'all. This is @lovinlatte's "pasta la vista" post. It's finally time for food puns! Really, what'd you expect from someone who named her blog Lovin' A Latte?
Being single is hard. I know, I know, my last post really brought home the bacon on the benefits (namely, 2am tacos), but singleness also holds people back from lovin' on folk. For the longest, I thought hospitality involved a complicated dinner and a formal dining room. Not so. Not at all. There's no need to wait for overpriced flatware from the Macy's registry! Plastic is fine. Store-bought is fine. If the Barefoot Contessa has said "it's fine," it's actually perfect.

One place I've seen my view of hospitality change is at church. My favorite part of leading in student ministry is serving dinner with my friends on Friday nights. Usually, it's pizza. I didn't make the pizza. I didn't even order it. But I know that the jokes and banter during those 15 minutes of "cheese or pepperoni?" have deepened relationships and helped me open up to my tribe. They've kept me present and taught me about my people's preferences. People take note and feel at home when you remember what they like. It's small, but it is important. The book of Acts shows us how the church fellowshipped: They hung out. They ate. They prayed. Did they make bad puns? I don't know, but I look forward to making more of them.
What are some false ideals that keep you from embracing hospitality? Have you cultivated a hospitable spirit in an unexpected place?

It's been a real honor getting to share with y'all. Natasha's posts (and stories) warmed me up to the idea of developing in the kitchen and creating home anywhere. God took that initial interest and turned it into full blown mission. He. Is. Good.

lovin' you some lattes,

Steph

NEWSFLASH, y'all: lone-wolf @lovinlatte is single. And not currently open to mingling. Unless you're willing to go through 637 interrogations from my family, church kids, and wing-man. Being single is so, so special. It affords me the unique opportunity to drop everything in support of my friends and family. It's the time to cultivate hospitality and be present. A single person can get away with an open-door policy in ways and at times that a married person can't. A girl's gotta eat, people love to eat - why not bring it all together?
I purposely under plan my meals and leave room for breaking bread (or drinking lattes) with others. Whether or not this takes the form of 2am therapy sessions in the Taco Bell parking lot is completely up to the other person.
In his first letter to the Corinthians (v. 34), Paul writes that single women are, "anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit." I don't know about you, but it feels SO GOOD knowing I only have one focus: Kingdom building. That's it. Regardless of our non-traditional circumstances in this world, our only job is to seek the Lord and His Kingdom.
What's one way you can reach out to a pair (or a spare) in your family or community?
xo,
Steph
