I was lucky enough to see up close that @dollyparton was every bit as special behind the scenes as she was in the spotlight.

I had the chance to be with her at the very beginning of her new @dollymusical musical through the premiere in Nashville. Dolly, decked head-to-toe in rhinestones, sat in the front row of every rehearsal smiling, clapping, and cheering on the cast. But she also came with notes. It was so cool to watch Dolly help direct her own life story, which has now become her final act.

With a wonderful team of people, I helped lead a student fellowship where @belmontu students worked with Dolly and the musical team. Even after full-day rehearsals, she stayed to greet a long line and take pictures with the cast, crew, and our students. She deeply cared and had a heart for teaching and helping people from all walks of life - young and old.

My own family also looked forward to finding Dolly’s @imaginationlibrary books in the mailbox each month. Dolly wanted every child to have access to books because she grew up with so little. That program has been a Godsend for so many families across the country.

We also took a last minute, and one of our favorite family road trips, to @dollywood at Christmas where we experienced so many of the Tennessee traditions she loved and shared with the world.

Dolly’s wit and wisdom always made me smile. She leaned on humor even when powerful people and the music industry weren’t kind to her. That part of her story stayed with me, especially after living in Nashville and watching her musical take shape. People tried to underestimate her and tear her down, but she kept going, as so many women have had to do.

Two of my favorite Dollyisms:

“If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.”

And:

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

Rest in peace, sweet Dolly. We will always love you. 🤍
