IMPORTANT ART COLLECTIONS OF THE 21ST CENTURY Volume 3: Andrew Hurle & Stephen Bram September 19- October 10 The third volume of Important Art Collections of the 21st Century looks at pipes collected by Andrew Hurle & Stephen Bram. The pipes were found while walking along the Yarra and around Melbourne, becoming part of an ongoing collection of strange, improvised and discarded objects. There was something about the way these things had been made and where they had ended up that made them worth keeping. Some look like bits of infrastructure, some like inventions, some like things that have been put together by someone who needed to make something work. The collection becomes a way of remembering places, walks, conversations and the people you share them with. Andrew Hurle & Stephen Bram PIPES (1990– ) Important Art Collections of the 21st Century is an evolving collection curated by Caspar Connolly. Endless Lonely Planet Room 618, Level 6 The Nicholas Building Fri 1-6pm, Sat 11am - 3pm Or by appointment

Two artists stare, ever so mightily, at a tiny 1.5 x 1.5 mm spot on the wall. Everything in the next moment hangs on it, before the spot disappears into every other spot on the wall without particular focus ever again. My thanks to Masato Takasaka and Stephen Bram — the duo behind ‘couch' (on which we are standing) ‘+ work table’ (in Masato’s shared studio next-door). Best birthday celebration I’ve had for years. First time I’ve had a canelé cake and definitely not my last. Far better, though, than a canelé cake (if you can believe), a work by Donald Judd was exhibit alongside — well, in the room next door, that is, and in an entirely separate solo exhibition — a work of mine. Exhibition: Two solo exhibitions: Donald Judd, Gail Hastings Curated by Masato Takasaka and Stephen Bram Exhibition’s duration: the time it takes for a coffee, a canelé cake, considerable debate and documentation. Donald Judd’s solo exhibition included one work, a 1979 drawing of a plywood work he had made, with the plywood work’s measurements reading 19.5 x 45 x 30.5 inches. Many big thanks to the drawing’s private collector here in Melbourne. My solo exhibition included one work: To stare at a stare 21 stairs away Watercolour and lead pencil on paper, acrylic on wood 50 x 50 x 1.8cm If one enters the drawing through the lower left door, one has a choice of either turning immediately left to sit in a chair to stare into actual space through to the other side, or take the 21 stairs to the other side instead. Thank you Masato and Stephen #melbournesculpture #sculptuations #spaceinart #gailhastingsstudio #gailhastings Two artists stare, ever so mightily, at a tiny 1.5 x 1.5 mm spot on the wall.
