Lot 21 is 'Candle' by Mehdi Dandi courtesy of Stephen Bulger Gallery.

Influenced by poetry and the evocative power of images, his practice approaches photography as a way of thinking—an inquiry into perception, memory, and the act of seeing itself.

Through carefully constructed compositions, Dandi creates images that unsettle the relationship between subject and environment, inviting moments of ambiguity, tension, and contemplation. Rather than offering fixed narratives, his photographs encourage viewers to linger in uncertainty, discovering meaning through observation and reflection.

[𝐎𝐧 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰] Toronto member @stephenbulgergallery presents 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙋𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙨, the second solo exhibition of work by Dawoud Bey at the gallery.

" [...] This series marked the first time Bey transitioned from a 35mm small-format camera to the more perceptible 4 x 5 inch format. Using Type 55 Polaroid film, Bey created a reciprocal experience with his subjects: after posing for the photograph, each person received an instant 4 x 5 inch print. Bey retained the large negative, which allowed him to produce enlarged prints later in the darkroom. These magnified prints vividly describe his sitters, their style, and their presence, creating an emblematic record of the time at a scale that replicates the intimacy of a personal encounter between sitter and viewer."

→ On view through October 17, 2026

Saturday’s Art & Food Excursion took us along Dundas W, beginning at Morning Parade Coffee Bar, where community engagement coordinator Mania Mo reserved space for our group. After chatting about our art interests, we visited the Alleyway Gallery a short walk away. Artist Gustavo Jabbaz explained how the outdoor wall in a laneway, founded to display his work, evolved to host exhibitions by other artists. Joe Fleming introduced The Bench, a digital work he created over two months in Greece. His diaristic process weaves scribbles, notes, drawings, photographs & films into a cinematic collage, with a soundscape by Sun Rain. He also alerted us to a book of his work being published next year.

At Stephen Bulger, manager Lisette Markiewicz guided us through Street Portraits, American photographer Dawoud Bey’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. In the late 1980s, Bey photographed people in Brooklyn, Rochester & Washington, D.C., moving from a 35mm camera to a larger 4 x 5 inch format. Using Type 55 Polaroid film, he gave each subject an instant print & kept the negative to make the enlarged darkroom prints on view. At our request, Lisette also showed us Janet Dey’s works combining photographs, text & fibre. Since 1995, the gallery has become Canada’s “go to” destination for historical, modern & contemporary photographs as well as trade & limited-edition photography books.

Our lunch stop at jazz club CONTXT by Trane featured creative Caribbean dishes by Chef Chris, delicious sorrel mocktails by Sandy & Haitian tunes spun by DJ Lupinore.

Our final stop was Olga Korper, where artist Katherine Curci & director Shelli Cassidy-McIntosh toured us through Curci’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Founded in 1973, Olga Korper is among Toronto’s longest-running commercial galleries, championing both established & emerging artists. Many of us initially mistook Before the Light Changes for a photography show. Looking closer & hearing Curci describe her meticulous charcoal drawing process left us in awe. One participant said the waterscapes evoked the calm she feels when visiting her family home on the Adriatic Sea.

Next Sunday, October 4, join artist Christina Leslie at the MacLaren for a closer look at her exhibition, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐴𝑙𝑏𝑢𝑚. 🎞️ The exhibition examines the family photo album as a kind of sourcebook, asking how photographs shape what is, and isn’t, documented about a life.

During this artist talk, Christina will share more about the photographs at the heart of the exhibition, as well as the gaps and unanswered questions that inspired her to expand the work through video and audio. 📼📽️

Come hear directly from the artist and get a behind-the-scenes look at the stories, memories, and missing pieces that make up 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐴𝑙𝑏𝑢𝑚, and view the exhibition at the MacLaren before it closes on October 25.
