Not since Elektra has an opera so relentlessly hovered at the edge of bristling tension as Innocence, Kaija Saariaho’s final masterpiece. At its core, the work confronts the persistence of trauma in the aftermath of communal tragedy—a school shooting whose pained memories recursively fracture and dissolve into the present, rendered in an innovative musical idiom at once spectral, unstable, finely wrought, and hauntingly beautiful. Working with librettist Sofi Oksanen, Saariaho constructs a polyphonic tapestry that interweaves spoken text and sung lines across multiple languages—a narrative strategy that both connects and destabilizes perspective, mirroring the disorientation of those left behind.  Saariaho’s swan song is as probing as it is beautiful, posing difficult questions: can blame be contained within a single perpetrator, or does it radiate outward—into family, school, society? Is anyone truly innocent? The opera ultimately unsettles the very notion of innocence as a fixed moral category. Grief in this opera is experienced as communal stratified, and often contradictory—each perspective held in uneasy counterpoint against other voices. The drama builds toward revelation that denies catharsis, instead culminating as a fragile ethical reckoning. Having seen Innocence during its American premiere in San Francisco and more recently at the Metropolitan Opera, I’ve come to regard it as my favorite modern opera. At the Met, Joyce DiDonato was most devastating as Teresa, and the ensemble largely met the work’s formidable demands. However, I found myself preferring several aspects of the San Francisco performances: at the Met, the uneven amplification occasionally rendered spoken lines indistinct, and Susanna Mälkki’s conducting, though finely detailed, felt less taut than Clément Mao-Takacs’s more immediate, dramatically charged reading. Among the spoken roles, Lucy Shelton and Julie Hega (a sinuously menacing Iris) stood out, while Rod Gilfry and Miles Mykkanen once again brought intelligence and gravitas to Henrik and Tuomas. Vilma Jää’s eerie vocalizations made Markéta’s folk singing emerge as one of Saariaho’s most ingenious and final musical inventions.

What an experience “Innocence” was. The ending was devastating. The music was fascinating, blending elements of opera, sprechstimme (a cross between singing and speaking,) Finno-Ugric singing, as well as actors delivering their lines in various languages. Kaija Saariaho left us not only a whole new way of listening and many new ways of making music, she showed us how to experience silence and hear light, but she also lead by example how powerfully art can make bold and yet subtle statements - with empathy - about important and difficult questions of life and the world we live in. Tonight we're going to open the performances of INNOCENCE at the @metopera and I am certain that even for the New York audiences this work will be a experience that remains in the hearts and minds for a long time. A huge toi-toi-toi for all of the exquisite team, thank you all for your artistic generosity, sensitivity and dedication for this extraordinary work! Bravi @sofioksanen and @aleksi.barriere for waving the storyline so hypnotically. Bravo @simonandrewstone for creating such extraordinary setting and presentation for the production! Bravissimi for our truly outstanding cast for your gorgeous singing and your truthful and moving portrayals of the complex human characters of this masterpiece: @joycedidonato @vilma.jaa @themilesshow @jacquelynstucker @sop_kathleen_kim @baritonebartender Rod Gilfry @stephenmilling Lucy Shelton @simon_kluth @camilo_delgado_diaz @juliehega_ @marina_dumontanastassiadou @beamordalsoprano The amazing @metorchestra and @metoperachorus with Tilman Michael The fantastic music staff @srosgood @mattphatt @ksenialeletkina @lydia___brown Dimitri Dover And everybody behind the scenes 🙏🏻 📷 @maaritkytoharjuphoto

Saw Tristan und Isolde for the first time yesterday afternoon, and it met my expectations and then some. The entire cast was fantastic. I can’t wait to hear Lise Davidsen in The Ring Cycle at The Met soon. #wagner #tristanundisolde #liebestod #metopera #richardwagner

A full afternoon of culture at the @metopera (5 hours, 3 acts with 2 intermissions) for the final performance of the season of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde with @sylvestj and a cameo by @mermaidkicks. The music was moving, the set design by @esdevlin was spectacular…gave a me a bit of 007 vibes, and the costume design by @clintramos was ethereal…especially the pipe playing shepherd at the start of Act III.
