Today would have been Steve’s 59th Birthday. I’m not entirely sure how he would have felt coming so close to 60 - he always hated the ‘5’s, as that was leaving one decade to tiptoe in to the next, so with that theory in mind 59 would probably have been ok as it’s close to a decisive zero.

‘Cool Summer’ was the last piece of film and series of photographs Steve was working on when he got ill in late November 2022. It was shot in October 2022 in Atlanta and was a gorgeous shoot. It was a big, uphill struggle to get there, to find somewhere warm in October, somewhere green that had a huge lake and no views of buildings.

@samlevydp was DOP, @morgan_k._spencer second, @andrewlimclarkson head of art department, @kegrand creative director, @thomasgoldser editor. And a beautiful cast put together by @bitton.

We shot for three long days. Steve pottered about with his file of reference pictures and shot list trying to herd the cast who were on three different sets and buggy trips apart.

This edit was put together predominantly by Steve and Thomas, with help from Morgan after Steve’s passing. The voiceover is @everanderson who read one of Steve’s favourite songs, ‘Cool Summer’ by Bob Lind - I recommend finding it on YouTube to hear the original.

On Steve’s death he had left instruction to find ‘F1 playlist’ on his computer and ‘Cool Summer’ was one of the tracks. The beautiful words seem to fit with the visuals and were beautifully read by Ever in late 2023 when we finalised this piece.

Remembering the talented bassist, songwriter, record producer, remixer, photographer, filmmaker and longtime member of Pulp since 1989 after playing in another Sheffield band called Trolley Dog Shag and pursuing his interest in film-making which lead to graduating from London's Royal College of Art in 1992, MA Film and before forming a songwriting/production partnership with Ross Orton (known as Cavemen) which worked with numerous artists including Maya Arulpragasam (M.I.A.), Kelis, Cornershop, The Kills and The Horrors, collaborating solo as a musician, songwriter and producer with numerous artists including Jarvis Cocker, Florence + the Machine, The Long Blondes, Steve Albini, Summer Camp, Palma Violets, Willy Moon, Dean Blunts, Yak, Danny Goffey and Arcade Fire, working as a music director and sound designer creating mixes and original compositions for films, museums and other commercial projects with John Gosling, playing a cameo role as a member of the fictitious band The Weird Sisters in the film “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” alongside Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway, co-curating the music program of London's annual Frieze International Art Fair from 2003 to 2008, going on an 8-year hiatus until returning to activity with Pulp in 2010, playing with drummer Seb Rochford as Serafina Steers’ rhythm section and beginning the Call This Number guerrilla TV project with Jeannette Lee and Douglas Hart, making erratic film broadcasts from a North London garage and recording artists like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Dennis Bovell, Sleaford Mods, Primal Scream and Gruff Rhys, the much liked family man who sadly and untimely passed away on this day in 2023 from cancer, Steve Mackey.
Ever since I discovered Pulp all those years ago, Jarvis’ cheeky storytelling and distinctive voice, their music and its feel-good factor have been an essential part of my life and its accompanying soundtrack, providing familiar, comforting, intriguing, wonderfully eccentric, pleasant, uplifting and joyful energy.
May he rest in peace and live on in his music and the lives of those who appreciate him and his work.
