39 today. What a year!

Gonna spend my last year in my 30s doing what I love: raising my girls, screenwriting, making movies, making music, chillin with friends, going to concerts, watching stand up, building new relationships, upping my net worth, eating amazing food, exploring, and learning from my mistakes

Rounded out the weekend at @austinfilmfest in a BIG WAY.

I attended panels hosted by Jeff Nichols and Shane Black where I gleaned transformative knowledge and skills for taking my movie from where I’m at now all the way to the goal post!

Then it was more community building and hanging out into the night with new and old friends. A few of us attending a screening of The Order which was followed up by a QnA with the writer and actor Tye Sheridan.

There was MUCH coffee.

I ended the conference scootering around Austin with Gabe Braxton. Check out and follow the progress of his film @aghaunting !!) We took a scooter-break to watch Smile 2 at the OG (I think…) Alamo Drafthouse. That garnered a fun filmmaker conversation; the kind I absolutely miss and thrive on! Then more scootering.

It was a PACKED weekend that was, at times, overwhelming. But in a good way. If anything, I’d say my main takeaway isn’t to worry about the end goal as much but to focus on enjoying the process and to think of what it means to be a storyteller not as a goal to be attained, but as my vocation. As Jeff Nichols put it, “it was never a question of IF I was going to make my movie but WHEN and with whose money.”

I can’t wait to come back next year. But more importantly, I look forward to staying in touch with and lift up everyone I’ve met along this journey. Keep doing the thing. #AFF #AFF31

Had a great start at @austinfilmfest!

I met screenwriting competition director Grace first thing and thanked her for letting me be part of the judging process. Then I caught up IRL with friends from the Twitter Screenwriting community, and hit a couple of @roadmapwriters parties in and around that.

It’s only been two days but it’s an incredible experience full of community building; hearing writers’ stories, pitching my own story, and receiving valuable feedback from industry pros.

Ended Our Wednesday seeing @thepianolessonplay film at the @paramountaustin and, folks, that was one of the purest, communal cinematic experiences of my life. The way that movie played to the room, the way that room reacted and cheered during and for that film… that will absolutely not play on Netflix. It’s a shame. But don’t let that keep you from watching it when it debuts. (Find the trailer now.) The film ended with an emotional QnA with writer Virgil Williams (@djvluv, Mudbound) that lifted the entire room and sent us out into the night with our cinematic spirits renewed.

It’s only been two days but, yes, the his feet is magic.

I spent 40 consumed by grief. My heart broke in so many ways from it and in addition to it. I broke. But, during this time, my friends showed up, picking me up from or sitting with me on the floor. I made new friends who have become dear friends and amazing support systems. I feel engaged and love in my communities. I’m working on dream projects and crossed things off on my creative bucket list. I broke bad patterns, showed up for myself, and got a new prescription for my BS goggles. I broke at 40 but, the version of me built from it is better than anything I was before. Bring. It. On. 41.
