So good to spend some time with these special ‘Aussies in New York’ @nabnordin & @nickmodrzewski 🙏🏽 for ferrying us around Tribeca for gallery openings, even though we were only allowed 5 mins in each space :-)

When @steven.rendall agreed to our trip to LA he didn’t realise he was also signing up for my ‘Eve Babitz adoration pilgrimage/tour’. Here are some significant sites…

1: Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood

Author, artist, and LA It Girl (she’s so much more than that) died in 2021 at the age of 78. Eve is interred in the Cathedral Mausoleum in Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where we visited on a scorching 37 degree day. There was no respite from the heat even in the marble mausoleum, and despite knowing the exact co-ordinates of Eve’s memorial, it took a long time to find and I was quite emotional when we finally located it. There was a singular lipstick imprint of a kiss on the glass, I left my own.

Onsite cremation is available for USD $2,395, which includes essential services and is sometimes complimentary with the purchase of a specific niche or urn burial. I grabbed a brochure from the gift shop.

Eve Babitz made LA the main character in her writing - and I went looking for traces of the LA she documented, much of it fast disappearing or long gone.

2. The Sheiks, Hollywood High

On our way to dinner at one of Eve Babitz’s favourite haunts, @mussoandfrankgrill on Hollywood Boulevard, we chanced upon a game by The Sheiks; the team and mascot of Hollywood High (Eve’s high school) is named after matinee idol Rudolf Valentino’s 1921 silent film ‘The Sheik’. It was an essay on Valentino that got Babitz her first Rolling Stone assignment (referred to the editor by Joan Didion) and a photograph of Valentino is interred with Eve.

3. Musso and Frank, Hollywood Boulevard

Hollywood’s oldest restaurant - founded in 1919 - and pre-dating the naming of Hollywood itself, Musso and Frank is old school Hollywood, and you can imagine the deals, deceits and heartbreak that happened here in the leather booths. In homage to Eve, I ordered her favourite dish, The Filet of Sand Dabs (sautéed meunière) and a gimlet.

4. Musso and Frank, Hollywood Boulevard

5. Sunset Marquis, West Hollywood

Babitz was deeply embedded in the L.A. music scene, and the scene of much of its revelry was the Sunset Marquis, a place that Eve praised for its “jolly ambience li

For the first time in over 20 years - @steven.rendall & I are traveling together - sans famille. Despite our trip (planned at extremely short notice) nearly not happening after I had purchased the flights - because one of us realized they didn’t actually have a valid passport (not me) - here we are having arrived yesterday in the middle of an end of summer LA heatwave. I love the morning flight from Melbourne to LA, which departs at 9.45am and arrives into LAX at 7am on the same day. It’s like the flight never happened. Also handy hint - if you purchase tickets on this code-share flight from Melb to LA from the American Airlines site, as opposed to the Qantas site, you save about $800 per ticket. Go figure.🌴
