During Paris Fashion Week, I visited the temporary Re{form} Zara by John Galliano pop-up, conceived as an immersive exhibition, showroom and retail experience at 70 Rue des Archives. The installation featured a distorted couture salon and atelier presenting Galliano’s research and sketches, with references to Les Incroyables, Les Merveilleuses, and particularly his 1984 Central Saint Martins collection. As a collaboration that was very much bashed from the get-go, I actually found it quite whimsical and fun to explore. It reminded me a lot of the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studios in London, bringing the same childlike fantasy to life, but through a fashion lens. The clothes themselves aren’t necessarily extraordinary in their construction, but rather in their outlandish designs and silhouettes. I think it’s a daring collaboration on both parties’ behalf, and an interesting attempt at elevating the brand, or re{form}, as marketed, thus arguably justifying the price tag for what is essentially still fast fashion, but at the end of the day, also entirely up to the customer. I did however not appreciate the luxury retail tactics of exclusivity being employed by Zara, which felt quite peculiar in this context. All in all, an enchanting experience. I’m curious to see what will follow ahead of this two-year collaboration period between Inditex and Galliano.

Re{form} 👗👖 La métamorphose couture de Zara par John Galliano John Galliano @jgalliano ouvre les archives de Zara @zara à la haute couture et transforme ses pièces familières en silhouettes nouvelles, théâtrales. Le couturier considère les pièces emblématiques de l’enseigne comme autant de prototypes à déconstruire et réinventer. Chemises, manteaux, robes, costumes et accessoires sont découpés, agrandis, réduits, assemblés ou détournés pour donner naissance à une garde-robe genderless, façonnée selon les gestes de la haute couture. Au cœur de cette métamorphose surgissent les Incroyables et les Merveilleuses, figures exubérantes de la France post-révolutionnaire qui ont marqué l’imaginaire de Galliano. Leurs silhouettes et leurs attitudes traversent la collection sous des formes contemporaines, entre dandysme, glamour du film noir et vestiaire horticole. Le vêtement devient ici un personnage, capable de modifier la posture autant que l’apparence. La collection repose sur une idée simple : refformer plutôt que reproduire. Chaque création part d’une pièce ou d’un accessoire issu des archives de Zara, transformé par Galliano avant d’être réalisé dans une nouvelle matière.
