It started with ranch dressing. Then things got weird.

Meet Emma Hearst: chef, entrepreneur, mom, and the curious mind behind For Fun. Over bagels with her friend Joe, Emma shares the winding road from opening her Manhattan restaurant, Sorella, to building a farm and creating a colorful shop filled with antiques in Hudson, New York.

Through family home movies, candid conversations, and a few ridiculous detours, we get to know the people and experiences that shaped her and how an unexpected setback opened the door to a new beginning.

Let me introduce you to Emma.

Emma is the host and creator of @forfununiverse, but over the last year, I’ve gotten to know her as so much more than the person in front of the camera.

She’s funny and witty and beautiful. She’s surprising. A little rough around the edges in the best possible way. She knows what she thinks and she’s not afraid to say it. She asks questions I wouldn’t think to ask and notices things I might have walked right past.

Working with her has genuinely changed the way I look at things. Objects, people, stories, and even the reasons we choose to tell certain stories in the first place. She’s made me more intentional about being curious.

She’s also a mother, an entrepreneur, and a woman who isn’t afraid to carve out her own path. I think that’s another reason we connect so well. We’re both raising kids while building things we believe in, figuring it out as we go, and hopefully showing our children along the way what it looks like to be strong, independent women who pursue what makes them happy. There’s something really special about getting to work alongside another woman who understands that.

And underneath all of it, I think we share a pretty fundamental belief: life is too short to spend it doing work you don’t care about with people you don’t enjoy.

Make things you love. Work with people you love. Take the work seriously, but maybe don’t take yourself quite so seriously.
I’m incredibly grateful that this weird, funny, surprising project brought Emma into my life AND that I get to help make For Fun with her.

I can’t wait for you to get to know her, too.

For Fun started with ranch dressing.

And somehow, it grew into an examination of my own family history alongside the stories of people who collect, sell, inherit, and obsess over things.

We’ve ended up in barns, antique stores, museums, sculpture gardens, schoolhouse replicas, and a castle.

We’ve found beautiful things, ridiculous things, very expensive things, and things worth absolutely nothing that someone would fight you for.

It turns out, what people choose to keep can tell you an awful lot about them.

And what they let go of can tell you even more.

So that’s For Fun. Sort of.

Been quiet on here these last couple months. Setting up my new space took a lot of time, especially while attempting for the first time to keep a real schedule.
