Review 👇🏽

We're talking Oklahoma history on Chapter 44 of the Bookcast with author and historian John J. Dwyer.
John and I talk about "The Oklahomans" - his two-volume epic history of Oklahoma - as well as his other writing in history and fiction. We also talk about the importance of telling history as a story and the importance of hard work and sacrifice.

Steve Wedel provides our review for this chapter, talking about Deer Run Trail by David R. Lewis.

Wow, this was an amazing month for me. As many of you know, the past few months have been one huge reading slump for me, where I’d only read about three books. So, wow, to read all this was amazing. Granted, only one of them was on my July TBR 🥰

In the Woods
Rating: 5 Stars
Genre: YA Supernatural

It should have been just another quiet night on the farm when Logan witnessed the attack, but it wasn't. Something is in the woods. Something unexplainable.
Something deadly. Hundreds of miles away, Chrystal's plans for summer in Manhattan are abruptly upended when her dad reads tabloid coverage of some kind of grisly incident in Oklahoma. When they arrive to investigate, they find a witness: a surprisingly good-looking farm boy. As townsfolk start disappearing and the attacks get ever closer, Logan and Chrystal will have to find out the truth about whatever's hiding in the woods...before they become targets themselves.

Guys this book started out INSANE in the best possible way and stayed that way. Admittedly I'm a little bit of a cryptozoology nerd so when I saw Oklahoma Bigfoot story I was all over this like gravy on biscuits. But guys, ITS NOT BIGFOOT! But we stay with the cryptozoology concept so you know, still a happy camper. also, not a spoiler. You figure that out almost immediately. The alternating points of view between Logan and Chrystal help you get the full story but also makes it a book both boys and girls alike will enjoy. The pace is rapid and you better buckle in because it's a wild ride. The dialogue is solid with realistic "teen speak" and a romance that isn't over the top. The mystery angle is also well executed and I didn't know who the main "beast" was until like 10 pages before the reveal. It was also nice to read a book where both teens weren't worldly and jaded with unlimited bank accounts.

❓Do you spend a lot of time or effort picking your next read?
.
I usually do. I have the hardest time deciding! Well, except for audiobooks from the library, where I just read in order of expiration date. But paper books... I get stuck overthinking. So for my writing break, I scanned my shelves and just grabbed whatever I felt like reading at that moment. Took less than five minutes to pick out this stack. And less than five to straighten them and snap this photo.
.
I’ve been making my way through these! It’s a lot easier to pick my next read from seven or less books than from a hundred. So far I’ve read 2.5 of them and all have been great so far!
