STEVEN MEDEIROS / TORONTO STREETS

@steves_ipics

Toronto Streets is an ongoing black-and-white study of everyday life across Toronto, photographed entirely on iPhone. Steven Medeiros works with the immediacy of a device that is always at hand, using it to respond quickly to passing gestures, street encounters and shifting compositions. The series embraces a direct, instinctive approach to observation, reducing the city to monochrome and concentrating attention on the moments that emerge within its daily rhythm.

Selected by Street Attitude.

In the Afar region of Ethiopia's Danakil Depression, "camel caravan" refers to a traditional caravan of camels and people transporting salt from the salt mines to market towns, a practice that has historically been central to the local economy and culture but is now declining due to the rise of truck transport. "Salt mining" describes the dangerous and difficult work of the Afar people who manually break and shape salt from ancient salt flats, a millennia-old tradition.

Camel Caravan:

Ancient Tradition:

These caravans are a centuries-old method of transporting salt and other goods across the harsh landscape of the Danakil Depression.

Afar Culture:

The caravans are a vital part of the Afar people's economic and social life, moving salt for centuries to other parts of Ethiopia and the Red Sea coast.

Declining Practice:

While still occurring, the tradition is gradually becoming obsolete, with trucks increasingly replacing camels for salt transport.

Salt Mining:

Location:

The salt is extracted from the vast salt flats, primarily around Lake Afdera, in the Danakil Depression, which is one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth.

Method:

Afar salt miners use traditional tools to break the salt from the earth and shape it into blocks called 'amoli'.

Source:

The salt deposits are left behind from ancient floods of the Red Sea.

Economic Significance:

For the Afar people, salt mining and trade are essential for their livelihood, with the salt bars historically serving as a form of currency in remote areas.
