Huge thanks to @thenorthernart for sending me to @annecyfestival this year. My third time there, but my first spending time with Stuart, Rachel, Lowri & all at @aardmanacademy! Very proud that we are Partners with such a great group of people with some incredible resources. Not to mention a terrific alumni community!

I don’t often post on here. Perhaps that ought to change… But in any case, this weekend was worth a shout out. Armed with some new headshots, silly stories and fabulous knowledge c/o @bafta195 @bafta, it was also an occasion of beautiful catch ups that has wrapped up a week of lovely birthday celebrations and reminders of why I do what I do. Wonderful stuff. Onwards!

Earlier this year, on the 19th of January, singer/songwriter Nikita Faie (@nikitafaie) popped into my Instagram DMs. Prompted by fellow York storyteller @dsthrace - thanks for the recommendation, mate - she introduced herself; but I had no idea then that it would lead somewhere quite so special.

In fact, at this point, it’s hard to remember a time where we didn’t know each other. That’s because we’ve been on a bit of a journey together into the world of pixilation, a form of stop-motion involving the animation of live actors. For those who have forayed into this realm themselves, you’ll know that it demands a lot of patience, a lot of care and a lot of trust; and in our case, a lot of laughs. On a pixilation set, time blurs, ideas osmose and magic is made.

The scope of Nikita’s pitch was ambitious, and I knew I’d need some practiced hands if I was to pull off directing and animating such a thing: @singlemaltproductions shaped hands, to be precise. Camera wizard Jamie Touche (@jamietouche), production design sorceress Kate Beard (@k.l.b.design) and I first met at the NFTS on a pixilation shoot (see ‘One Minute Workshop’ on my website), while producing machine Emma Hanson (@emmahanson13) and I connected when the four of us began working on our award-winning grad animation ‘Build Me Up’.

Fast forward to now, and we’ve had brilliant support from movement director Phoebe Stapleton (@phoebestapleton) - who crafted shapes and lines so gorgeous that I fancy she may secretly be an animator herself - as well as from fellow Build Me Up & NFTS alum Eve Bannister (@evebannisterart) and animation extraordinaire Joey Hawks (@joeyhawksanimation).

So, what do you get when you put all of these people together? Good soup, that’s what.

With a final word of thanks (for now) to this wonderful bunch, to @helpmusicians for their funding support and to everyone else that helped us out, I want to invite you all to look forward to INSOMNIAC, releasing August 30th.

More to come… #Insomniac, #StopMotion, #Pixelation, #IndieMusic, #Animation, #NikitaFaie, #NewMusic

I wanted to place a more permanent record of @welovepulp on here. God it was brilliant. Seeing them at Leeds 2011 made me a fan, but I never thought I’d get the chance to go to a gig *as* a fan to fully appreciate their music. This was it. Mad crowd. Lots of love. Incredible. Just what I needed ☺️

#QOTD from @jarvisbransoncocker - “This next one is a nice quiet one. So I must respectfully ask you to shut the fuck up.”

Celebrating Mum and other Mums today… Near, far and beyond. Also, on a less existential note, attempted a shepherd’s pie for the first time. Nigel Slater. Lambtastic. #mothersday

Well, Annecy, you lost none of your magic while we were away. What a treat to experience @annecyfestival #2022, and in such good company. Managed to see some wonderful animation, catch the @netflix showcase, meet @realgdt, see The Sea Beast, meet Chris Williams, and somehow managed to meet Disney producer Roy Conli, and attend Disney’s rollercoaster presentation. This also meant I was among the first in the world to see ‘Baymax!’, and you can imagine how much of a treat that was for a robot boy like me. I also met Galynn Susman, the producer of Lightyear and credited with being the person to save Toy Story 2 after its master files were accidentally erased. What a time. Until next year… 🎥 🍿 🤖 #annecy #animation #nfts

As I get older, I’m really learning how precious time is. I’m glad we’re still here all these years later 🖤 ☕️ 🎨

When @ardaminglis orders 3 more pints when it’s closing time and everyone else has gone… // a very pleasant first #TopGearTrio meet since before the pandemic. And where else would we go except a #SamSmiths for a taste of home.

As it turns out, one of those photographs I had really wanted does exist… NFTS Animation Class of 2021. So much love for these amazing people, including Robert, the greatest leader and guardian we could have asked for. What a ride! ❤️#borntobealive #firstyearbase #wenttoanactualfestival #cavedwellers #animators #animationdirectors #family

At the end of an emotional week, we were very proud to present Build Me Up yesterday in London. I wasn’t able to get all the photos I would have liked, but this lovely shot of @emmahanson13 and I was snapped in the morning by Melissa. I love my team to bits, but this lady in particular has a special place in my cold metal heart. Very special to share the day with my nearest and dearest NFTS family. Thank you to everyone that was there… Near, far and beyond. Now… Someone hire me! 😆 🤖 🤖 // #bmu @bmufilm #nfts #nftsstories @nftsfilmtv #robots #short #scifi #animation #shortfilm #director #animator #producer
