In late-1970s Las Vegas, Steve Steadham rode the bus to the last stop and walked two miles through 110-degree heat to reach a spillway. He remembers white skaters staring at him. His Black friends told him Black people don’t skate. Then he found the Dust Bowl, an empty hotel pool where older skaters carved up to the tile. That day he knew skateboarding would be his for life. Born in Farmington, New Mexico, in 1963, he rode the Greyhound to California. At Upland’s Gold Cup, Steve Caballero signed his board before he dared to ask. After graduating in 1981, he skipped law school and moved west a week later. Within two years, Stacy Peralta invited him onto the Bones Brigade with Caballero, Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain and Mike McGill. When Peralta wanted him to stay amateur, Steadham turned pro anyway and offered to pay his own entry fee. He won the boardslide, carve, pipe and bank slalom events that day. Known as “Freight Train,” he skated on speed and power, and his signature Spade deck followed in the mid-1980s. Being a Black skater with dreads on the best team in the world felt surreal, he said. Kids wore out Powell videos on VHS, thrilled to see a brother on the screen. His second career began in 1986, when he launched his own brand, before teammate Rodney Mullen co-founded World Industries. “My name has to be attached to it,” he said. Pro skater Clyde Singleton recalled that, at 13, seeing him run his own brand meant everything. The third belonged to music. He heard Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” and, a dozen bars in, knew he would play drums. He stepped away from skateboarding for 15 years, drummed in Citizen X and other bands, and ran a San Diego studio where P.O.D. wrote the album Satellite. He has since recorded 350 songs. Today Stedmz makes boards, shoes, apparel and coffee, and his Las Vegas shop pairs skate gear with guitars and a stage. He also produced ESPN’s Legends of Vert for the X Games. The Skateboarding Hall of Fame inducted him in 2022, and next he is forming the Steve Steadham Foundation to bring extreme sports and the arts to communities. As he put it: “Skateboarding is something you do, doesn’t matter what color.” > Written by @haywaidot1

Has something ever happened to you that was so incredible it seemed almost unreal—yet was COMPLETELY TRUE? That’s exactly how a friendship with Steve began after I posted my Steve Steadham Powell Peralta deck here on Instagram (which, I should add, went viral thanks to the algorithm, racking up likes and views). Then came this magnificent, totally unexpected "gift"—currently making its way from Las Vegas to Senna Comasco in Italy (accompanied, naturally, by countless prayers and candles to ward off any customs mishaps or duties). That autographed, personalized deck repays me a thousand times over for everything I’ve done and for the raw, visceral passion behind everything you see and read here. Steve—a Hall of Famer, original Bones Brigade member, and true skateboarding legend—is my friend! Thank you, my friend; that photo of you posing with my board is pure gold! God bless you. Dio ti benedica. #SteveSteadham #Skateboard #Skate #Vans #IndoratoCollezionato
