This is my ode to dance, which I don’t do enough anymore. An acknowledgement of my love for dance, choreography, and movement, one I’ve had from childhood, but firmly discovered later in life.

It’s a freedom that’s greater than singing for me, so I’m happy I don’t do it as a job.

It’s my connection to my ancestors, exercise, stress relief, and most of all, it’s just good fun.

It represents interconnection, community, sexuality, and connection with self through the mind and body.

I especially thank those in my life who made dancing familiar, comfortable, and routine—my parents, always randomly dancing around me in my childhood; my brother, one of the best dancers I know; and the men who, by example, channelled comfort and confidence in movement, encouraging dance without abandon in an environment where movement and masculinity often don’t mix.

Big up to Tony Wilson, Bert Rose, Professor Rex Nettleford, veteran dancers in Jamaica; fitness instructors: Andro Henry, Oral, Dave; Other professional Jamaican dancers: Marlon Simms, David Blake, Marcos James, Steven Cornwall, Orville McFarlane, and so many others, of my fellow Jamaican brothers who didn’t choose dance to be brave, but who were brave enough to dance because they love it and had no choice. Dance chose them.

To every woman I exchanged energy with on a dancefloor, who taught me about respect, patience, sexuality, approach and boundaries.

To the many moments dancing alone in front of a mirror, discovering my body and its capabilities and limitations.

The thing is, dance for me isn’t just random shaking. Dance parallels life, and for me, the analogy is that we cannot fear our gifts. We should not shun our talents, but sadly, some of us only become unafraid when there is too little time left to do the routine full out.

So dance hard, like no one is watching, even if the room is crowded, or even if the room is empty. Dance because you want to, but most of all, because you love it.

To more, and more, and more dancing!
