Japow! How International Tourism Reshaped Japanese Skiing

Japan has become world-famous for its deep, dry powder—“Japow”—but the country’s ski story stretches far beyond big storms and viral videos. Our most recent magazine issue features an article by Steven Threndyle that looks at how Japan’s rich ski history evolved into the global destination it is today.

Japan’s ski culture began in 1911 with Austrian Major Theodor von Lerch, whose instruction helped launch a nationwide interest in skiing. By the 1980s and ’90s, Japan’s booming economy fueled massive resort development, high-speed Shinkansen access, and crowds so large that lift lines became legendary. At the peak, Japan had more than 800 ski areas.

A downturn in the 1990s led to closures and aging infrastructure, but it also opened the door to a new era. Beginning in the late ’90s, international travelers (especially Australians) rediscovered Japan for its affordable lodging, welcoming culture, and incredibly consistent powder. Resorts like Niseko and Hakuba soon transformed into global hotspots, drawing visitors from around the world and reshaping Japan’s ski economy.

Today, international tourism continues to revive the sport in Japan, even as parts of the industry struggle to modernize lifts and cope with demographic challenges. From luxury hotels to classic ryokans and resurrected ski lodges, Japan now offers both high-end experiences and authentic, off-the-beaten-path skiing.

"Off-Piste Adventures: Fifty Years of Skiing"

Nostalgia kicks in as i pore through a half century's worth of ski adventure photos in prep for an AV presentation at Edgewater Community Hall, March 8 at 7 pm. Admission is by donation, with proceeds benefiting the Edgewater Senior Society.

On reflection, the decades i’ve spent learning how to avoid avalanches and deal with the bone-chilling cold in the Rockies and Interior Ranges have transferred seamlessly when applying those skills to the greater ranges.

The stills and video clips in the show feature skiing off the top of Canada’s highest peak (x 2), traversing Denali on skis, making the first ski descent of Antarctica's highest peak, a peak in the Chilean Andes the height of Mt Robson, several trips to Russia (the Caucasus and Kamchatka) and quaffing the pristine powder, and sake, on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido a decade before it was mobbed by commercial groups.

And my all-time fave expedition: "In 1981 Morrow and his companions spent nine days ‘skinning' to the top of 7,500m Mt Muztagata in the Chinese Pamir, just shy of the altitude of the South Col on Everest. He inadvertently cranked the world’s highest telemark turns that day. With time to spare at the end, Morrow and (Kiwi) Gallagher hitched a ride downvalley in a Liberation Army truck to ski exquisitely-formed 300 m high sand dunes they had spied on the bus ride to the mountain."
