POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Two simple shapes settle into a Lake MacBridge peninsula. A central spine moves you from the kitchen straight through to the water. Sunrise porch. Sunset patio. Every room is postioned with one thing in mind: toward the lake. The architecture is honest about what matters here. It's not the building. It's the water. It's the landscape meeting the water. It's the days spent outside vs inside.

This is a home built for arrivals. Cedar Rapids family coming down for the summer evenings, weekends, or somewhere inbetween, stretched long as you can manage them. Adult children and growing families under one roof again, the kind of gathering that only happens when you're away from everything else. We made room for all of that—for the quiet mornings on the porch, for the kitchen that becomes the center of everything, for the rainy afternoons when you're grateful to be inside together.

The materials we chose—a traditional German Schmear brick, painted cedar lap siding cedar, and that Royal Canadian cedar shake roof, they're built to weather seasons. To get better as summers pass. The wood will silver. The brick will deepen. Each summer leaves its mark on the home and it's craft.

What does a summer at the lake mean to your family?

A quick iteration of what the living room and kitchen could be. White Oak Floor, Walnut Wood casework and trim, A stone panel fireplace surround with warm grey undertones to help bring in the foilage beyond.

STILL + Form Function got into a fun collaboration on iterating this living room and kitchen of a residence we are working on in Indianapolis. Our process internally always starts with conversations and questions, morphs into sketching, then digital modeling and design, and finally comes to these images that we hope evoke emotion towards, honestly, love or hate. Every design move is intentional, as an anchor move, or a complement.

These iterations are impactful for us, as Architects and Designers too. We can gain the feelings of affirmation around the deisgn move we made, shine a light on an area where we need to get things figured out, or honestly, where we just completely missed. And that's okay, design is never linear.

We continue to believe in the why we work so hard at our craft so it makes these collaborations with friends so fun.

For more than 20 years, a couple from the north side of Indianapolis enjoyed weekends at the husband’s parents’ home on Grandview Lake in Columbus. As their lives evolved and they welcomed four children, the family outgrew the grandparents’ space and came to a bittersweet realization: The days are long, but the years are short. “We only have so many summers with our kids,” the husband says. While they brainstormed the possibility of building a home nearby, an innovative concept began to percolate: a generational lake house.

The couple envisioned a property that could accommodate kids, extended family, friends, and (eventually) grandkids. They wanted a destination where they could celebrate birthdays, holidays, and all the long weekends in between.

Before these new experiences could come to life, they needed to find a lot on the same side of the water as the grandparents’ home. The only problem? Most homeowners on the private lake had been there for decades, and available space was virtually nonexistent. The wife began going door-to-door to ask if anyone was interested in selling.

In a serendipitous twist, a longtime friend opened one of these doors—at her parents’ home. While the friend’s parents had no desire to move, they were willing to sell some of their land.

How do you live with the lake, not just next to it?

That was the question at the heart of this home on Grandview Lake in Columbus, Indiana. A family who knew what mattered most, connection across generations, and a design that answered back with every decision made.

Two distinct masses organize the home, separating the quiet from the gathering so both have room to breathe. Mono slope rooflines angle deliberately toward the water, pulling views into the rooms rather than competing with them. The material palette stays honest — warm cedar, clean lines, nothing that fights what is already there outside the glass.

The result is a home that earns the lake. Every window placement, every roofline pitch, every material chosen with the water in mind.
This is what it looks like when a vision becomes a home.

Before a single line gets drawn, we listen and learn.

Every project starts the same way around here. Not with measurements or mood boards, but with a real conversation. What does your day actually look like? What's getting in the way? What do you want more of?

That's where the design begins. Not on paper. With people.
A home that works for your life is the only kind worth building, and we are so grateful we get to ask those questions alongside the people we serve.

What would you want your space to create more of?

Seven years of Form Function Studio—and we’re just getting started. [Celebrated back in February!]

Grateful for the people, projects, and communities that have shaped this journey. We remain committed to designing spaces that connect, uplift, and elevate everyday life. The partnerships created with our clients, vendors, consultants, contractors have been incredibly uplifting and special to us.

"All Glory is to Him. I deserve nothing and he provides all we need to have impact.
Here’s to what’s been built, what we dreamed of, —and what’s still to come."

Big Love from our Studio to you!

We’re looking back on one of our most incredible partnerships to date: @still_arch and our 2025 Home-A-Rama home! 🤩

We couldn’t have done this project without the help of Patrick Kestner’s collaboration with our incredible team. What a feat!

My favorite design detail of this house, you ask? No doubt is the gorgeous double-sided built-in hutch by @carpediemdesign.co that connects the main and the scullery. The drawers actually pull out on both sides making the same drawer accessible to either side. Very unique, clever, and, ultimately, extremely useful.

@custom__living, in collaboration with @still_arch, designed and built this stunning home that is situated on the 16th fairway of the prestigious @chathamhills, a Pete Dye-designed golf course.

Each detail and material was carefully considered and selected by the Custom Living Design team - and it certainly shows!

This is truly a one-of-a-kind home.

Masonry and Exterior Siding are full steam ahead at our home nestled in on the 16th fairway of Chatham Hills.

Our team, in collaboration with @still_arch, has designed a story and selected a material palette with the intention of giving this home a midwestern aesthetic combined with luxury amenities.

What is a Midwestern aesthetic you might ask? We believe that it’s warm and inviting, with depth, character, and a quiet confidence rooted in authenticity.

Cannot wait for it to all come together in September for the 2025 @indybuilders Home-A-Rama tour!!

We searched high and low to find the perfect slabs for this beautiful kitchen. It was truly worth the wait as the expert book matching and waterfall islands really showcase the natural beauty of the stone.
