Documentary on gospel-reggae in the works
‌
by: Howard Campbell
(Jamaican Observer Journalist)

Jul 04, 2023 12:33 pm

A Miami film company will explore the roots of gospel-reggae in the Caribbean through its documentary, titled Still Blessed. The project is expected to cover five countries, with production scheduled to start in August.

Still Blessed is produced by Behind The Fabric TV for which Drew L Hinds Jr is CEO. Hinds, whose parents are Jamaican, was born in Brooklyn, New York but spent some of his youth in Grants Pen, St Andrew.

While there are many documentaries on reggae and Caribbean culture, that is not the case with contemporary gospel in the region. Hence, Still Blessed.

"We have all grown up listening to gospel-reggae music throughout our younger years, but the story has never been told of how the music came to be. Still Blessed is that platform to finally hear from the pillars of gospel- reggae," said Hinds.

Filming is set to take place in South Florida, Jamaica, Barbados, The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. Hinds did not disclose the persons who will be interviewed but said his company have identified figures who played integral roles in the genre's rise.

Hinds is familiar with the legacy of The Grace Thrillers, a group that formed in Kingston during the early 1970s. In the 1980s, they broke into the secular arena with songs like Can't Even Walk and Jesus.

Their success set the pace for a number of former secular artistes who gave their lives to Christ during the 1990s. They included Carlene Davis, Junior Tucker, Papa San and Lieutenant Stitchie.

There are similar movements in other Caribbean countries and Hinds believes their stories need to be heard.

“I can honestly say that God placed this burden on my heart to be the platform for the people of God in the West Indies, to share their testimony of music ministry as only we know it," he said.

Still Blessed is tentatively scheduled for release in 2024.

Still Blessed The Documentary/
The Origin of Gospel Reggae Music In the West Indies

MIAMI, FL - We have all grown up listening to gospel reggae music throughout our younger years, but the story has never been told of how the music came to be. Still Blessed Documentary is that platform to finally hear from the pillars of Gospel Reggae.

We have known their music, but do we know their story? What inspired these artistes to give their lives over to music ministry, in a secular era of fame and fortune? Our film crew will be traveling throughout the Caribbean from Miami to interview other key players that crafted reggae gospel music as we know it.

"I can honestly say that God placed this burden on my heart to be the platform for the people of God in the West Indies, to tell their testimony of music ministry as only we know it. Like many with Jamaican lineage, I still get emotional when I hear Shirley Willis sing an old Grace Thrillers selection. This is why, we as a people need to preserve that legacy." - Drew Hinds (Film Director & CEO of Behind The Fabric TV LLC)

In an era where we are constantly seeing wars and rumors of wars, poor countries are suffering from violence and proverty. As West Indian, we need music ministry to quench our thirst for hope, because ultimately we are "Still Blessed!"

Behind The Fabric TV LLC is a film production company based in the Miami area that focuses on filming documentaries that aim to empower society as we know it in a positive light. "I am not a pastor, yet a humble servant. I have found that one's sincerity can be lost in the performance displayed in ministry, leaving a mere form of godliness. My legacy, is to constantly provoke positive people to be intentional about mental and spiritual growth, because light will always dispel the darkness in this world." - Chaplin Drew L. Hinds Jr.

"Oh Lord, my God, your people are hurting. They cry out to you in the still of thier quite place. We need you now more then we have ever needed you before. Hear and answer your manservant. Remove this cup from your children. We are not worthy of all the blessing you have bestowed on our lives, yet you still bless us because your grace and mercy is endless. We ask you to move in our lives, right now.

Remove any convenant we have made with the enemy of God, a vain spirit, a lying tongue, a covetous heart, any doubt & fear from our spiritual beings, so that we may walk bold in the face of our adversaries. Hear our cry oh Lord, and answer our prayer. From the end of the earth our hearts will cry to thee. When our hearts are overwhelmed, lead us to the rock that is higher than I.

Father God, you promised to never leave us nor forsake us. God, when our friends and families have turned their backs on us, you are all we have or need in this world of sin. So, show up and show out Jesus! Don't leave your child to beg for bread. Make our enemies our foot stool. Give us victory over the strong holds in our life. Give us the faith that can move mountains. We are more than conquers. In our spirtual walk, help us not to conform to man made traditions within the church, yet hold fast to God's commandments.

Lastly, we thank you for what you have done, are doing and will do in our lives. We praise, magnify, and lift up your merciful and holy name, Elohim (God), Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah), El Elyon (The Most High God), Adonai (Lord, Master), El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty), El Olam (The Everlasting God), Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide), Jehovah Rapha (The Lord Who Heals You), Jehovah Nissi (The Lord Is My Banner), El Qanna (Jealous God), Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You), Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace). Thank you for hearing and answering our prayer. Amen." - Chaplin Drew Hinds (author/film director @behindthefabrictv)
