I got this one out a bit later than I wanted to but worth the wait I think. This seasons playlist brings primarily new artists with some classics peppered in that I think, give distinctly cinematic autumn vibes to make the emerging brisk air feel effortlessly nostalgic and just cool.

Our queen, Sheena Ringo, released Kinji-te (Forbidden) this year—a deeply conceptual project centered on the classic board-game concept of “restricted moves.” She voluntarily sealed away her signature, long-standing habit of composing her own tracks, excluding self-composed pieces entirely in favor of a collaboration-driven approach.

This is far from a mere guest-feature compilation; it is a process of “deconstruction and rebirth within constraint.” The tracklist spans a diverse range of creators: Jun Miyake delivers an avant-garde, mythic French opener; “WORK,” her collaboration with millennium parade, fuses symphonic elements with modern electronic beats; while BIGYUKI and Ichiyo Izawa construct a highly intricate foundation of jazz and math/prog-rock.

By stripping away her own melodic framework, Shiina Ringo relegated her vocal presence to an ultimate “instrument” and “context weaver.” Demonstrating razor-sharp interpretative power, she distills an even fresher, strikingly unique creative force from within these self-imposed boundaries.

Blinding sunlight, buzzing cicadas, and cool swimming pools define Chengdu band Sleep Leaps’ noisy, restless summer. The album takes its title from Kim Ae-ran’s novel Summer Outside, in which snow falls inside a glass globe while summer rages outside. This contrast and sense of isolation reflect the emotions explored throughout the album.
