I’m back with another local band today! And I’m stoked to talk about Still There’s 2019 EP Flower Continuity.

I was particularly impressed with Still There because of their ability to play that cathartic style of emo that bands like Boys Life and Mineral played, with a heavier side to it.

The songs have a larger than life feel that construct a sonic soundscape but can feel incredibly personal at the same time. The second track on the album feels like a wall of sound that is a direct call back to the second wave of emo yet it has a combination of guitar blends that make it stand out.

It’s another example of a sound that was previously established in the 90s being built upon with such passion. It’s clear the band knew who their influences were and yet it feels new.

Still There is a perfect example of what a revival band should sound like. If you’re a fan of 90s emo and the 2010s revival, this band is perfect for you.

Tour wrap up post + the homies

The last week has been a truly magical time. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to go back to my day job after all of this to be honest.

Shoutout to my beautiful friends in @coupdetatbc @stillthereband and @mourningjoy.band as well as everyone else I met along the way in Kelowna and Vancouver that made this tour as extraordinary as it was. You guys rock.

Now in its third year, @blackiceyyc returns to @loopholecoffeebar December 7th to 13th with seven nights of noise, free jazz, drumless metal, indie rock, hardcore, emo, and punk. What began as a one-person proof-of-concept from organizer and musician @futurebuttons has become one of the prairies’ most consistent platforms for experimental, outsider, and emerging artists, all while staying DIY at its core.

Located in the garage of a cozy coffee bar off of Calgary’s 10th Street SW, @loopholecoffeebar is one of the city’s most dynamic DIY venues. What began as an espresso-forward hangout spot has become a hub for local music communities spanning punk, noise, emo, electronic, and beyond. Today, it stands as a rare all-ages venue where creativity flourishes, community thrives, and the next generation learns how to throw a show from scratch.
