WHEN by St. John Fuller Opening 30 November | 11:00 48 Albert Road | Woodstock . We are living in age where behaviour needs to dramatically change, yet only the smallest steps are been taken. We are all the foolish King Canute. We do not seem to want to change our behaviours. This is despite the overwhelming evidence that continually confronts us. We are facing an incoming tide whose potential for destruction is growing ever greater. We keep getting told what we need to do but yet we seem to be ignoring this opportunity. What action we do take is often just piecemeal. Enough to make us think we are doing something, but in fact not enough. What if these pieces of buildings long lost could assemble themselves? Rising up to form a legion of story tellers. Each figure telling a tale of the consequences of failing to heed a warning. Formed out of a lifeless substance, their will being to help, to try and make us understand. To show us that much like King Cnut we are not all powerful.

WHEN solo show by St.John Fuller . SATURDAY 30 NOV | 11:00 . Growing up I have been fortunate enough to have been exposed to a variety of myths, legends and stories. Ted Hughes story of the Iron Man is one that is never far from my mind. A robot whose pieces lay scattered on a beach in pieces, assembles itself and eventually saves mankind. One day I found myself marvelling at the building debris to found on the beach. The tide does not consider whether it is allowed to breach the homes that man builds close to the shoreline. It’s power means that it will eventually overcome the walls that are built in defiance of its strength. And so scattered about me I found the evidence of mans limitations. A thought popped into my head. “What if?”

It’s the final week to experience our group show, Undertow, @6spinstreet - Come and say hi before we close on Saturday at 2pm Thank you for supporting and engaging with our work 💙 All our bodies of water, fresh or salt, are mirrors to our inner landscapes - we are inextricably linked. It is our first womb. The cosmic amniotic fluid … And an unquantifiable source of wellness. I share #bluemind as a way to advocate for mental health and to share my own experience of water being: Pockets of sanctuary Moments of shelter A place of safety All the ways I find asylum 🖤 @darrentroye @gabybeyers @bethewavethatiam @helen_walne @joh_del @natashanormanart @stjohnfuller @sujaysanan . #ocean #art #spinstreet #undertow #artshow #groupshow #exhibition #capetownart #bluemindlife #uwphotography #uwphoto #underwaterphotography #underwaterlife #underwaterphotographer #middlewater #visualpoetry #capetownartists #whatsonincapetown #nobluenogreen #spreadhope #mentalhealthswims #saltwatertherapy #tidal #capetowntidalpools #uwfineart #whatliesbelow #theseainside #bethechangeyouwanttosee

Still on show at the @avagallery.za for First Thursdays this month are the three exhibitions: ‘STONED: Remembering the 80s’ curated by Cheryl Traub-Adler, ‘Safe Spaces’ by St.John Fuller, and 'How to be Black for Beginners’ by Thuthukani Myeza. ⠀ ‘STONED: Remembering the 80s’ in particular constellates the work of artists that originated out of the Cape Town based Michaelis School of Art, Community Arts Project, and the Vakalisa Art Associates network. ⠀ The works and posters on exhibition were produced during a critical moment of apartheid repression. A decade where Southern Africa was in an undisclosed civil war and artists utilised their skills as a form of resistance and expression of their trauma. ⠀ The use of printed medium, woodblock, scraper-board, linocut, pencil, and ball-point pen were put to use as social commentary and to disseminate information in a time before the internet. ⠀ As an archival show, the visual lens is not centred around aesthetics. The viewer is invited to participate in the activation of these memories, to think about our collective humanity and what is at stake If we disregard each other. ⠀ Featured artists include: Ângela Ferreira, Billy Mandindi, Brett Murray, David Hlongwane, Diane Paulse, Emile Maurice, Gaby Cheminais, Garth Erasmus, Grant Schreiber, Jane Solomon, Janet Purcell, Jann Cheifitz, John Muafangejo, Jonathan Berndt, Kevin Brand, Louise Linder, Lovell Friedman, Lynne Lomofsky, Manfred Zylla, Mario Pissarra, Michael Barry, Nicolaas Maritz, Patricia de Villiers, Paul Grendon, Roger van Wyk, Sophie Peters, Terry Kurgan, and Zbigniew Kaczmarak. ⠀ The AVA's current exhibition programme runs until 8 June 2023. ⠀ Association for Visual Arts 35 Church Street 5pm - 8pm ⠀ __ ⠀ For the full programme of things to see and do for First Thursdays, go to first-thursdays.co.za (link in bio). ⠀ #FirstThursdaysCapeTown
