Newsletter March 2026:

This is a text accompanying the portrait of Stefanie Wels, activist and artist from Amsterdam.

Stefanie was portrayed for the photoseries 'Friends of the Meteorite Museum'.

Full text:

Stefanie, a.k.a. Sea Weed, has been campaigning against deep-sea mining for years with the heavy metal band 'The Polymetallic Nödules'.

With unwanted concerts the band plagues companies, conferences, governments and company outings. Basically any place where deep sea mining is promoted. The music of The Polymetallic Nödules is horrific: only deep-sea mining is worse.
The Meteorite Museum would like to highlight and draw attention to the fight against deep-sea mining to save the manganese nodule.

'The manganese nodule (polymetallic nodule) produces oxygen and is important for deep-sea life. These nodules contain metals, useful for batteries, but good alternatives have long existed. Scientists, big companies and 40 countries are against this new, disastrous form of exploitation of the Earth. Deep-sea mining only makes a few companies rich! So leave those manganese nodules alone!'

SEAGULLS HAVE RIGHTS!

On Friday the 25th of October, a group of seagulls plus a fox protested in the center of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. They made their mobile nest here and there, laid some eggs, pooped and squeeked. End goal of the journey: the ‘HAVENBEDRIJF’ (port authority). Why?

The Port Authority has been destroying seagulls nests and eggs in the past years and also chases away foxes and rabbits. Because they want to control the port territory. 36.000 eggs have been destroyed. The seagulls are a protected species, and the Port Authority went much too far in controlling the area. A local party went to court and the Port Authority was whistled back. But still they keep on making plans to chase animals away, without substantiating their acts.

The population of seagulls has been diminished seriously by the rough actions of the Port Authority.

The question is: who are we, humans, to think that we rule over other animals? Why should the seagulls leave in favour of industry? Who is the Port Authority to think they can manage and control nature?

Since the industrial revolution, we lost 85% of our biodiversity. Let’s cherish the animals we have left!

The seagulls and fox handed a letter to the Port Authority with their claims and wishes. They will watch the case closely and defend their nests with their life!

An action of @animalrebellion.netherlands and @xrblockbrass !

There is no true social revolution without the liberation of the women, we must always create space for women to take charge in the fight for climate.

Last Monday, we had our screening of Deep Rising at @vera_zienema.

We had a very fruitful conversation with @stofenas after the film. Thank you, Stefanie, for your valuable insights on this pressing matter that is endangering our oceans.

We hope to see all of you again for our next screening of On the Fringe. More information coming soon!

‼️AARDS HERSTEL ZONDER (FOSSIEL) SHELL‼️
