Meet The Bystanders – Part Two

Meet Show Off, another of our Bystanders from Play With Me.

Like Dolly and Wriggler, Show Off grew out of simply playing, experimenting and allowing the character to take shape without knowing exactly where it would end up.

But there’s also a more personal story behind this one.

Growing up, sign language was part of Scott’s everyday life through his older sister, Julena, who is disabled. Hands, gestures and the different ways we communicate with them were therefore a natural part of childhood, and something we began playing with again while developing these works.

Show Off emerged from that process, mixing those memories with humour and a little bit of cheekiness.

Because, of course, not every hand gesture needs translating. 😉

Meet The Bystanders – Part One

Meet Wriggler and Dolly, two of the Bystanders from Play With Me.

The Bystanders are all about letting go and simply having fun with making. No set rules, no predetermined outcome, just playing with glass, colour, found elements and ideas to see what characters might emerge.

And these two certainly found their personalities along the way.

Wriggler, with his rather fabulous Glasma 700 glass moustache and hands made from reclaimed cut crystal glassware, is every bit as quirky as his name suggests. Dolly has a personality all of her own, emerging through that same playful process of making, experimenting and seeing where things might lead.

They’re a little strange, a little humorous, and very much about what happens when we stop taking things too seriously and simply play.

The exhibition Play With Me was developed in the workshop, where Phil and Scott spent periods as guest artists. With a focus on play, exploration, and experimentation, not everything went according to
plan—some pieces cracked, collapsed, or were set aside.

What Was Left Behind consists of these “lost” works, later brought back and fused together in the kiln to form a new piece. Fragments were given a second life, and what was once considered a failure
became part of something new.
