The day I started my search for a 170/172TD. I was flying my Kitfox around for a couple years at this point and quickly realized we needed extra seats and baggage space. I still wanted off airport capabilities and to also travel with the family. I don’t think there is a better suited airframe for that mission than then 170/172td with big engine.

Unfortunately the decision has been made for this weekend…… no Spring Rogers fly-in. Very disappointed that we had to cancel two in a row (last fall and now) 😔. Weather hasn’t been working in our favor.

Happy New Year!

What a year 2023 has been, spending time with some amazing friends and also meeting a ton of new ones in the process. Another trip to Oshkosh that was topped off riding with the Aeroshell team, a visit to Alaska with a flying experience that we will never forget and more importantly sharing so many memories with my family.

A huge thank you to everyone that has been there with us and also that is following along here.

Big plans for 2024 starting very soon.

Christmas Day grass at Flabob, to the sweet musical poetry of @coldplay #clocks. @twoeleven_aviation will show this landing to his friends…(He only posts the good ones). “There are currently 2 of these old straight-tailed C172, tailwheel conversions for sale on Barnstormers, it is an amazingly fun plane to fly. The C170C, the 170, too. Buy one, make it your own, enjoy in good health. Fabulous machine! 😎👍” -Unanimous

SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY

My name is Shawn Johnson. I have been flying my whole life. My dad took me flying when I was only 6 months old but I didn’t really appreciate what flying really was until I was in college.

I got my private pilots license in 2007 through eastern Kentucky university. With low airline pay at the time, it was more of a hobby than a career. But in 2017 airlines looked more enticing and I decided to go for it. I got my instrument, commercial, and CFI certificates quickly then dabbled in the part 135 and part 91 jet world flying king airs, beachjets and Citations. I decided a scheduled life was more for me so I went to the airlines. I now work as a first officer for Allegiant Airlines.

My job is amazing but I will never lose my passion for the small GA planes. I now own a 1955 Cessna 170B and use it to travel with my family all over the country as well as practice STOL. Short takeoff and landings. Going off airport and landing where no other airplane has been is more fun to me. I have competed in local STOL competitions and typically perform well. Last year I decided to try my hand at the National STOL series at a couple events and did well there also. Placing 2nd at Swamp STOL and 1st at Music City STOL in Nashville TN. I couldn’t imagine a better airplane to own. Its cruses at about 110kts on 9.5gph, can take off in 180 feet or less, and can haul whatever fits through the door.

Being a family man my goal is to stay a first officer at allegiant letting my seniority get better. The idea is to have the best ability to manipulate my schedule. Once I have been with the company long enough to be a senior Captian I will jump over to the bigger pay.

Rogers Int’l approach sadly won’t be happening this weekend. 😞

We haven’t had to cancel the flyin in 3 years but the weather just wasn’t going to cooperate this time.

Lately, I’ve been feeling stuck with my filmmaking journey, shooting the same thing over and over again with wedding and aviation filmmaking. My creative juices have fallen to a trickle, and it’s been a challenging and frustrating time. But I believe that in every creative drought, there’s potential for a downpour of inspiration. To break free from this rut and revitalize my filmmaking, I need to embrace change. At end of this year; I’m walking away from my wedding videography business to pursue my inner dream further. I wanna push my documentary filmmaking to new heights, and pursue a passion that has been digging at me for years as a aviation storyteller. But the truth is, I’m scared. I’m scared to fail. I’m scared to walk away from comfort. I’m scared that my new business won’t grow. I’m scared to walk on other people toes. I’m scared of getting out of my comfort zone. I’m scared that I’m not good enough. I’m scared that I don’t have enough skills. A lot of doubt crosses our minds throughout life, recently, it’s been hurting me hard. I want something so bad, but just so worried … that I won’t be able to financially keep affording doing this every year after year. But reality is, all I wanna do is create and do better., and be a better filmmaker than yesterday.
And my future with Kyle Newsom Aviation LLC is who I am and wanna be. Sorry to share the truth on my feelings, but it keeps me accountable and authentic with my feelings. Lately, my mind is all over the place. I just wanna focus on one thing for months, and create something that I’ll truly be in love with.
